OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE
To maintain school department vehicles to ensure the safe, clean, and comfortable transportation of students and drive as needed. DUTIES and
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Must be knowledgeable and familiar with the contents of the "Minimum Standards for Pupil Transportation in Maine" manual and the statutes related to student transportation and school buses.
  • Provides all hand tools normal to trade.
  • Checks with Head Mechanic daily for work orders and assignments.
  • Inspects, services, repairs, and road tests all school department vehicles that are referred to shop by vehicle drivers.
  • Checks safety items on all buses brought in for service.
  • Reports all defects that cannot be repaired in the shop to the supervisor.
  • Maintains and properly stores all tools and equipment necessary to perform vehicle maintenance.
  • Uses safety equipment provided and follows safety procedures.
  • Makes recommendations to Head Mechanic for development and performance of a preventive maintenance program.
  • Maintains cleanliness of work area.
  • Reports all salvageable material to Head Mechanic.
  • Is always prepared to drive a school bus to transport students when assigned.
  • Performs other duties and assumes other responsibilities as assigned.
  • May be required to service disabled buses in adverse conditions.
QUALIFICATIONS and
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
  • Knowledge of vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • High School Diploma/equivalent preferred; experience as a mechanic.
  • Maine Commercial Driver's License with P and S endorsements.
  • State of Maine certification to inspect Class A, B, and D vehicles .
