Job Description

Under basic supervision, the Heavy Truck and Equipment Technician is responsible for the repair, servicing, preventive maintenance, and inspection of diesel-powered equipment, light, medium and heavy-duty truck. Responsible for diagnoses of malfunctioning light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and equipment, and for determining the actions to be taken for repairs.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Service, troubleshoot, and perform complex truck repairs on engines and related components of electrical, mechanical, and computerized vehicle systems. Diagnose and repair malfunctions of truck computer components. Perform preventive maintenance inspections on all equipment. Road tests vehicles and equipment for proper operation prior to returning to the user department. Cuts, grinds, and fabricated equipment as needed. Orders and receives parts. Assists and works with other technicians in performing complex repair problems. May respond to road calls and make on-site repairs. In the absence of the supervisor, may lead the work activities of others. May weld metal components to repair parts for equipment and vehicles. Diagnoses and repairs malfunctioning hydraulic and cooling systems. Participates in cleaning and maintaining shop equipment and work areas. Regular and consistent attendance for the assigned work schedule is essential. Responds to after-hour, weekend and holiday road calls on a continuous rotating basis. Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Skills:
Knowledge of servicing, troubleshooting, diagnoses, and repair of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and computer component malfunctions of heavy-duty trucks. Familiar with Federal, State, and local environmental and inspection laws and regulations applicable to vehicle and equipment standards. Communication, verbal and written. Use of hand and power tools. Ability to operate a variety of computerized monitors, scanners, and analyzers with an understanding of computer codes to diagnose equipment and vehicle problems. Read, understand, and utilize technical repair manuals and schematics. Operate a computer terminal.
Education:
Completion of a technical or trade school program in heavy truck technology, or equivalent experience.
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in the repair and service of light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks with on-board computer components. Any work-related experience resulting in acceptable proficiency levels in the above Minimum Qualifications is an acceptable substitute for the above specified education and experience requirements.
Licenses and Certifications:
Must be able to obtain, and maintain in active status, a Class A-CDL within six (6) months of hire date. Certifications may be required depending on area of assignment.
