Job Description

Job Title:
Diesel Mechanic Job Description This role focuses on performing preventive maintenance and repairs on diesel trucks, trailers, and related equipment. You will diagnose and resolve mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues across a wide range of vehicle systems to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the fleet. Responsibilities Perform preventive maintenance on diesel trucks, trailers, and related equipment according to established schedules and procedures. Diagnose and repair diesel engines, including identifying performance issues and component failures. Inspect, troubleshoot, and repair suspension, clutches, manual transmissions, drivetrain, hydraulic systems, steering systems, fuel systems, electrical systems, HVAC, and air brake systems. Evaluate and properly diagnose driver complaints and reported issues with units, determining the root cause of problems. Identify and determine the root cause of part and component failures to prevent repeat issues. Complete assigned work orders accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with safety and quality standards. Perform welding tasks as needed to support repairs and maintenance. Use and maintain personal tools and shop equipment in a safe and effective manner. Maintain a clean, organized, and professional work environment, including tools, equipment, and work areas. Adhere to all company safety policies and procedures while working on vehicles and equipment. Support inspection activities and, if applicable, perform state inspections in accordance with certification and regulations. Essential Skills At least 1 year of experience in diesel engine repair (required). At least 2 years of mechanical knowledge and hands-on mechanical experience (required). Strong knowledge of diesel engines and related systems. Ability to perform preventive maintenance on diesel trucks, trailers, and related equipment. Proficiency in diagnosing and repairing electrical systems on vehicles. Experience working with hydraulic and pneumatic systems. Ability to troubleshoot and repair suspension, clutches, transmissions, drivetrain, steering, fuel systems, HVAC, and air brake systems. Competence in welding for repair and maintenance tasks. Capability to accurately diagnose driver complaints and translate them into effective repair actions. Ability to identify root causes of component and part failures. Must have personal tools necessary to perform job duties. Valid Class A or B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record. Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in mechanical and electrical contexts. Additional Skills & Qualifications MN Inspection Certification preferred, with willingness to obtain if not currently certified. Experience working in a sanitation or similar fleet environment is beneficial. Ability to work independently and manage assigned tasks efficiently. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship. Good communication skills to clearly document findings and repairs. Comfort working with a variety of repair tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop technology. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position operates in a sanitation-focused fleet maintenance environment, working primarily in a shop setting on diesel trucks, trailers, and related equipment. The work involves hands-on mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic repairs using a variety of tools, welding equipment, and diagnostic instruments. The schedule generally allows you to be home every night, with no regular weekend work except occasional shifts during holiday weeks to make up days. The environment emphasizes cleanliness, organization, and professionalism in all work areas, tools, and equipment, with a strong focus on safety and adherence to established procedures. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mankato, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $29.00 - $39.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
