Job Title:
Heavy Equipment Operator - Vac Truck Operator Job Description A Vacuum Truck Operator plays a vital role in utility construction by operating specialized hydrovac or vacuum excavation equipment to safely expose underground utilities such as gas, electric, telecom, and water without causing damage. This position is critical in trenching and site preparation, ensuring the safety and efficiency of construction projects. Responsibilities Operate hydrovac/vacuum trucks to perform non-destructive excavation. Locate and expose underground utilities through daylighting and potholing. Monitor water pressure, vacuum systems, and debris tanks. Follow all safety procedures and comply with OSHA regulations. Perform routine equipment inspections and maintenance. Collaborate with utility crews and construction teams. Maintain accurate job logs and documentation. Set up traffic control and jobsite safety zones when needed. Essential Skills Experience operating vacuum trucks or similar heavy equipment. Valid CDL, typically Class B or A, depending on truck size. Knowledge of underground utility systems. Strong safety awareness. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Additional Skills & Qualifications Hydrovac experience. Experience in construction or utility fields. Confined space or OSHA certifications (10 or 30-hour). Mechanical aptitude. Why Work Here? Work Environment Work is conducted entirely outdoors in various weather conditions, including rain, snow, cold, heat, and wind, provided it is safe for the crew. The position requires availability for overtime, with shifts typically running from Monday to Friday, and occasional Saturdays, starting at 6:30 am until 4:00 pm or later. Crew sizes range from 1-2 up to 10 members, reporting to a foreman or project superintendent. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Cohoes, NY. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $38.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
