About the Position The Town of Fishkill Highway Department is seeking a skilled and motivated Automotive Mechanic to join our team. This position is responsible for the efficient and safe maintenance, diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of a wide variety of gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, trucks, and heavy construction equipment. The successful candidate will possess a strong working knowledge of automotive and construction equipment repair and demonstrate the ability to diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical issues while maintaining a safe and productive work environment. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Perform skilled repairs on gasoline and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including automobiles, trucks, and construction equipment. Conduct diagnostic testing and inspections to identify service and repair needs. Perform preventive maintenance, servicing, and safety inspections. Repair and overhaul brake systems, differentials, transmissions, front and rear axles, and clutches. Repair and replace valves, bearings, pistons, rings, and other engine components. Diagnose and repair automotive electrical systems and components. Adjust steering mechanisms and wheel alignments. Perform field repairs on vehicles and equipment as necessary. Operate machine shop equipment, including grinders, drill presses, and other metal-working machinery. Fabricate or repair parts for automotive and construction equipment. Prepare estimates and material requisitions. Participate in snow and ice control operations, including emergency callouts. May assist with body repair and painting work. May supervise Automotive Mechanic Helpers or second-shift personnel. May be required to operate heavy equipment or other municipal vehicles as needed.

Minimum Qualifications Candidates should possess:

Good knowledge of the principles and practices of automotive and construction equipment repair. Working knowledge of welding techniques and fabrication. Knowledge of applicable safety practices and OSHA standards. Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical problems and perform difficult repairs. Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, plans, and specifications. Ability to work independently and efficiently with limited supervision. NYS Commercial Driver's License (CDL) NYS Motor Vehicle Inspection Certification Preferred Qualifications Experience maintaining and repairing heavy-duty trucks and municipal equipment. Experience with diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical diagnostics. Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain one. Working Conditions This position requires work in a garage environment as well as outdoor field conditions. Employees may be required to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and emergency hours during snow and ice events or other public works emergencies.

Pay:

$37.44 - $41.26 per hour
