Job Description

  • 1st Shift Trailer Mechanic
  • $30 - $40/hr
  • Job Description
  • This role focuses on performing comprehensive preventative maintenance and repair on trailers, including mechanical, electrical, brake, suspension, and minor body work. You will use your mechanical and carpentry skills, along with your own tools, to ensure trailers are safe, reliable, and compliant with established standards while working within a structured, safety-focused shop environment.
  • Responsibilities
  • + Perform thorough preventative maintenance on trailers, including checking and maintaining proper oil levels in hub caps, setting correct air pressure in tires, and greasing all fittings.

+ Carry out minor lighting repairs and replacements on trailers and related equipment.

+ Complete full brake jobs, including S-cam bushing replacements, brake chamber replacements, and air valve replacements for air brake systems.

+ Apply a solid understanding of spring and air ride suspensions, including performing proper alignment procedures and removing and replacing torque arms, equalizers, and springs.

+ Manage axle wheel end assemblies, including proper installation of hub and drum assemblies, bearings, seals, and races, following correct torque procedures for axle nut installation.

+ Troubleshoot and repair all aspects of trailer electrical wiring systems, including exterior lights, 7-way receptacles, interior lighting, and switches.

+ Perform minor body repairs and maintenance such as removing and replacing body side panels and posts, swing and roll-door panels, roof sections, and floor sections.

+ Conduct minor undercarriage maintenance and repairs, including removing and replacing crossmembers, ICC bumpers, spring hangers, dolly legs, and bracing.

+ Weld steel components from various positions to support structural and repair work on trailers.

+ Use personal hand tools and equipment to perform daily tasks, while effectively operating major shop equipment and large shop tools provided on-site.

+ Follow established standard operating procedures (SOPs) and safety guidelines at all times to maintain a safe and compliant work environment.

+ Collaborate with other technicians in a multi-bay shop, supporting team members and contributing to efficient workflow.

+ Accurately document work performed and ensure all maintenance and repairs meet quality and safety standards.

  • Essential Skills
  • + Demonstrated mechanical skills with the ability to perform comprehensive trailer maintenance and repairs.

+ Ability to perform complete air brake maintenance, including full brake jobs, S-cam bushing replacements, brake chamber replacements, and air valve replacements.

+ Basic understanding of spring and air ride suspension systems and alignment procedures.

+ Complete knowledge of axle wheel end assemblies, including installation of hubs and drum assemblies, bearings, seals, and races, and proper torque procedures for axle nuts.

+ Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing trailer electrical wiring systems, including all exterior lights, 7-way receptacles, interior lighting, and switches.

+ Capability to perform minor body repairs such as removing and replacing side panels, posts, doors, roof sections, and floor sections.

+ Ability to carry out minor undercarriage repairs, including work on crossmembers, ICC bumpers, spring hangers, dolly legs, and bracing.

+ Ability to weld steel components in various positions.

+ Ownership of appropriate hand tools and equipment necessary to perform the required trailer maintenance and repair tasks.

+ Experience performing preventative maintenance on trailers or similar equipment.

  • Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • + ASE certification is preferred. + Wheel end certification is preferred. + Brake and ABS certification is preferred. + Carpentry skills to support trailer body and structural repairs. + Experience with trailer repair, brake systems, welding, diesel-related components, and hydraulics is beneficial.

  • Work Environment
  • The role is based in a structured, safety-oriented 5-bay shop that follows detailed safety and procedural guidelines.

Standard operating procedures are in place for all technicians, and each technician receives certification for the equipment they use. There is no flat-rate pay system; technicians are compensated for the full time they spend working on equipment. You will work alongside five experienced technicians and one technician trainee, fostering a collaborative team environment. The schedule is first shift, Monday through Friday, from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with no weekend work. Overtime may be available after the regular shift as needed, with a maximum of 50 hours per week. Major shop equipment and large tools are provided, while technicians are expected to bring their own hand tools, all within a clean, safety-focused facility.

  • The pay range for this position is $55000.

00 - $82000.00/yr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
