Job Description
Position Summary The Village of Walton Hills is seeking a skilled and experienced Mechanic to lead the maintenance and repair program for the Villages fleet of vehicles and equipment. This position provides technical leadership and oversight for fleet readiness, safety, preventive maintenance, and corrective repairs across Village operations. The Mechanic performs diagnostics and repair work, establishes shop standards, and ensures accurate documentation and operational continuity. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Coordinate and perform daily maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of Village vehicles and equipment to ensure safe, reliable operations. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, drivetrain, braking (hydraulic, ABS, ESC, air brake), steering, suspension, HVAC, and minor body systems across the fleet; interpret wiring diagrams and electronic controls as needed. Perform advanced gasoline and diesel engine repairs, including tune-ups and major component replacement. Conduct welding and fabrication work (MIG, ARC, and gas-torch) to support structural and component repairs in compliance with safety and operational standards. Complete comprehensive preventive maintenance inspections; identify safety, performance, and reliability issues; and implement corrective actions to extend equipment life. Manage fleet parts and supplies inventory, including stock control, procurement coordination, cost-effective purchasing, and accurate inventory records. Assist the Service Director with equipment condition assessments, repair-versus-replacement evaluations, and preparation of specifications for vehicles and equipment. Maintain accurate, audit-ready records of repairs, inspections, inventory transactions, and equipment status. Support operational readiness during emergencies, severe weather events, and other Village service demands. Perform related duties as assigned by the Service Director. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED equivalent. Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL Class A or B) with a clean driving record. Minimum of five (5) years of full-time experience in automotive, heavy equipment, or industrial mechanics. Demonstrated industry-specific experience in diesel repair, hydraulic repair, electrical systems repair, and air brake system repair. Ability to manage and maintain spare parts inventory applicable to Village needs. Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Ability to understand and follow written and oral instructions. Must supply and maintain a personal set of professional-grade mechanic hand tools. Preferred Qualifications Municipal fleet maintenance experience, including service planning for seasonal operations and emergency response readiness. Physical Demands and Working Conditions Must be able to perform manual labor, including lifting, pulling, bending, kneeling, and climbing. Must be able to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 lbs. and occasionally more with assistance. Work is performed in shop and field settings and may include exposure to inclement weather, loud noises, fumes, oils, hazardous materials, and other conditions typical of fleet maintenance operations. Requires operation of vehicles and equipment such as trucks and heavy machinery. Must be able to work in confined spaces and elevated areas as required.
