Non-exempt Safety-Sensitive Position Policy Manual 2000 - Administration The district recognizes that the legal aspects and consequences related to medical marijuana, cannabidiol (CBD), and hemp are evolving and may be subject to change. These issues may affect various areas of the district's current policies regarding employees, students, parents, and individuals on district premises, driving district vehicles or attending district events. The district will continue to enforce its currently adopted policies. As changes in state and/or federal law occur, the district will review and evaluate its policies to determine whether revisions are necessary to remain in compliance with applicable laws. Employees of the district are expected to comply with all state and federal laws at all times as a condition of their continued employment with the district.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Mechanic Service Technician performs semi-skilled mechanical service, preventive maintenance, inspection, and related support functions for school buses, district vehicles, and other automotive equipment. The position works under the general supervision of the Lead Mechanic and is responsible for supporting the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the district's transportation fleet. The incumbent is expected to exercise sound judgment, demonstrate initiative, maintain a safe and organized work environment, and provide professional service to district personnel and equipment operators.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

The following duties are representative of the essential functions of the position. Additional duties may be assigned as required. 1. Operates school buses, district vehicles, and other transportation-related equipment in a safe and responsible manner. 2. Performs daily, periodic, and preventive maintenance on school buses, vehicles, and automotive equipment. 3. Inspects and services fluid levels, brakes, tires, lubrication systems, and other vehicle components. 4. Performs routine automotive maintenance, including fluid changes, filter replacement, lubrication, and related service procedures. 5. Assists with the preparation and maintenance of vehicles for required annual inspections. 6. Assists in identifying, diagnosing, and addressing routine mechanical problems and potential equipment concerns. 7. Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe service center in accordance with established department standards. 8. Properly uses, maintains, and stores hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, and other assigned equipment. 9. Delivers and retrieves school buses, district vehicles, and equipment from school sites and other designated locations. 10. Assists with vehicle recovery and wrecker service operations as assigned. 11. Picks up and delivers automotive parts, supplies, and materials for the Maintenance and Transportation Departments. 12. Completes required maintenance records, inspection forms, work orders, and other documentation accurately and timely. 13. Communicates effectively with supervisors, coworkers, district employees, equipment operators, and members of the public regarding vehicle and equipment needs. 14. Follows established safety procedures, district policies, and applicable laws and regulations. 15. Reports unsafe conditions, equipment deficiencies, and other concerns to the appropriate supervisor. 16. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Education

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.
• Completion of vocational or technical training in automotive service is preferred. Experience
• One to two years of experience in automotive service, fleet maintenance, or a closely related field.
• Experience performing basic preventive maintenance, including fluid and filter replacement, lubrication, and routine vehicle inspections. Licensure and Certification
• Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
• Required endorsements include: o Passenger (P) o School Bus (S) o Air Brakes

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The successful candidate must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:

• Knowledge of appropriate fuels, additives, lubricants, and automotive fluids.
• Knowledge of basic automotive systems, maintenance procedures, tools, and equipment.
• Ability to safely and effectively operate hand tools, power tools, shop equipment, vehicles, and other mechanical equipment.
• Ability to perform routine mathematical calculations involving addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
• Ability to read and follow written and verbal instructions.
• Ability to accurately complete forms, maintenance records, inspection reports, and other required documentation.
• Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, and courteously with employees, supervisors, equipment operators, and members of the public.
• Ability to identify routine mechanical problems and assist in determining appropriate corrective action.
• Ability to work independently and exercise appropriate judgment within established procedures.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and district personnel.
• Ability to follow established safety procedures and maintain a safe work environment.
• Ability to demonstrate dependability, initiative, accountability, and attention to detail.

CUSTOMER SERVICE AND PROFESSIONAL EXPECTATIONS

The Mechanic Service Technician regularly interacts with Transportation Department personnel, district employees, equipment operators, and members of the public. The position requires professional conduct, effective communication, cooperation, and a commitment to providing responsive service. The employee is expected to:

• Maintain professional and respectful relationships with district personnel and the public.
• Respond appropriately to service requests and equipment concerns.
• Work cooperatively with others to identify and resolve vehicle and equipment issues.
• Demonstrate punctuality, dependability, accountability, and appropriate workplace conduct.
• Comply with district policies regarding attendance, safety, dress, conduct, and other employment requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

The physical demands and working conditions described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of the position. The employee must be able to:

• Stand and/or walk approximately four to six hours during a typical workday.
• Frequently bend, stoop, squat, crouch, crawl, kneel, reach above shoulder level, push, and pull.
• Frequently lift and carry materials, tools, parts, and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 75 pounds.
• Perform repetitive movements using both hands and feet, including grasping, manipulation, and operation of vehicle controls.
• Demonstrate sufficient manual dexterity, visual acuity, hearing, and communication ability to safely and effectively perform assigned duties.
• Work in and around school buses, vehicles, power tools, machinery, and other mechanical equipment.
• Work outdoors and in environments subject to changing temperatures and weather conditions.
• Operate motorized vehicles and equipment as required.
• Safely perform duties in environments where exposure to mechanical hazards, noise, fumes, and other occupational conditions may occur.

SAFETY RESPONSIBILITIES

The employee is responsible for maintaining a high level of safety awareness and complying with all applicable district safety procedures and requirements. Employees must properly use tools and equipment, follow established maintenance procedures, report hazardous conditions, and take reasonable precautions to protect themselves, coworkers, students, district property, and the public.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

This position does not have regular supervisory responsibility. The employee works under the general supervision of the Lead Mechanic and is expected to perform assigned responsibilities independently while seeking guidance when appropriate.
