Vehicle & Equipment Mechanic Kerrville, TX $19.89 an hour
  • Full-time $19.89 an hour
  • Full-time Job Summary Diagnose, repair, and perform routine maintenance for City owned vehicles, mechanical equipment, small engine equipment, generators, and light and heavy equipment.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities This information is intended to be descriptive of the key responsibilities of the position. The following examples do not identify all duties performed by any single incumbent. Perform repairs and preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment by listening to operator complaints; conduct inspections, repair engine failures; repair mechanical and electrical systems malfunctions; replace parts and components. Perform and complete preventive maintenance such as, engine tune-ups, oil changes, tire rotation and changes, wheel balancing, replace filters. Verify serviceability by conducting test drives, adjusting controls and systems as needed. Prepare work orders and record service, repairs, and parts. Utilize cost containment methods by using warranty, evaluating service and parts options. Keep shop equipment operating by following operating instructions; troubleshooting breakdowns; maintain supplies; perform preventive maintenance; keep shop and work area clean and organized. Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications. Accomplish organization mission by completing related repairs and maintenance as needed. Perform other duties as may be assigned.
Minimum Qualifications, Experience, and Abilities:
Education, Certifications and Experience Required:
Possession of a High School Diploma or equivalent is required. Possession of a valid Texas CDL or ability to obtain CDL within six months of hire date. Three years of related experience is required ASE Certification or Tech School Certification is preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Requires knowledge of a specific vocational, administrative, or technical nature which may be obtained with training past high school from a college, technical, business, vocational, or correspondence school. Skilled in time management, safety management, verbal and written communication, and customer service. Ability to read and interpret manuals and technical publications, work independently, problem solve, deal with complexity, analyze information. Ability to use electronic equipment including computer, laptop, and portable or handheld analyzing equipment. Appropriate certification may be awarded upon satisfactory completion of approved advanced study or training. Ability to maintain regular and predictable attendance.
Machines, Tools, Equipment and Work Aids:
Hand tools, air tools, brake lathe, jacks, scanner, hydraulic press, welder, computer and computer analysis and/or scan tools, steam cleaner, parts washer, battery charger, tire machine and balancer, welder and cutting torch. Welders mask, apron, safety glasses, gloves, ear protection, dusk mask, respirator, back brace, technical manuals. Physical and Environmental Conditions Duties are generally performed citywide in both outdoor and indoor settings. This is medium to heavy work requiring the exertion of fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally, up to twenty (20) pounds of force frequently, and up to ten (10) pounds of force constantly to move, lift and push objects. Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, standing, walking, pushing and pulling. This position is subject to outside environmental conditions, including extreme cold, extreme heat, hazards, and atmospheric conditions. Medical:
With budget approval, the City contributes 100% of the cost for employee only coverage and contributes a portion of the cost of dependent coverage.

With budget approval, the City contributes 100% of the cost for employee only coverage and contributes a portion of the cost of dependent coverage.
Vision:
The employee pays 100% of the cost. Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D)
Coverage:
With budget approval, this is a City paid benefit for employee only coverage. Terms apply.
Long Term Disability Insurance:
With budget approval, this is a City paid benefit for employee only coverage. Terms apply.
Longevity:
With budget approval, employees earn $4.00 per month for each complete full month of continuous service. The employee must complete one full year of employment to be eligible. Maximum benefit is $1,200 annually.
Voluntary Life Insurance:
The employee may elect up to five times their base annual salary with a maximum of $250,000. Coverage for spouse and dependent children is also available for purchase. Terms apply.
Voluntary AD&D:
The employee may elect up to ten times their base annual salary with a maximum of $500,000. Terms apply.
Voluntary Short-Term Disability:
The employee may elect up to 60% of their base weekly salary with a maximum weekly benefit of $1,000. Terms apply. Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): This mandatory retirement plan requires each employee to contribute 7% of their gross salary to the plan and the City matches contributions 2 to 1. An employee becomes eligible to retire with 20 years of service or with five years of service at a minimum of age 60.
Optional Deferred Compensation:
The employee may contribute to a 457 plan through Mission Square Retirement.
Social Security:
Current rate is 6.2% for both employee and employer
Medicare:
Current rate is 1.45% for both employee and employer. Vacation
  • 12 days annually during first five years of employment (accrued monthly) Sick Leave
  • 12 days per calendar year (accrued monthly) Holidays
  • 14 holidays plus two floating day
