The Department of Environmental Services (DES) is seeking Automotive Mechanics to join our team! The Auto Equipment Bureau provides maintenance and repair services to all County and Schools fleet vehicles, including heavy fire apparatus, buses, dump trucks, utility trucks, passenger vehicles, snow-related equipment, and other heavy and light equipment. The selected candidates will perform skilled mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic repair and maintenance on a variety of vehicle types, reporting to the Trades Manager/Leader I.Specific duties include:
Performing diagnosis, corrective repair, and preventive maintenance on diesel, gasoline, hybrid, and electric vehicles and equipment, including light, heavy, construction, and/or emergency vehicles; Troubleshooting and diagnosing malfunctions in automotive mechanical, hydraulic, air brake, air conditioning, and electrical systems using computerized diagnostic scanning tools, test equipment, and visual inspection; Performing Virginia State Safety and Emissions Inspections; applying special features to vehicles such as snowplows; and preparing vehicles for snow removal operations; Completing road tests, roadside repairs, and vehicle transport to/from vendors or manufacturers as directed by supervisor; Cleaning and maintaining tools, shop, equipment, and work area; completing work order and state inspection documentation; (Auto Mechanic II) Performing highly complex corrective repairs and modifications; determining scope and sequence of repairs; providing repair feasibility recommendations on transmissions and related components; (Auto Mechanic II) Training, mentoring, and monitoring the work of Auto Mechanic I's; acting as Trades Manager/Leader I in their absence and assigning work orders accordingly; and Performing other job-related duties as required or as directed by supervisor. The ideal candidates will have experience performing diagnostic testing and corrective repairs on a diverse fleet including heavy equipment, fire apparatus, buses, and/or light vehicles in a municipal, government, or large-fleet environment.Minimum Qualifications:
High School Diploma/GED or equivalent; plus Auto Mechanic I - One (1) year of experience in motor vehicle repair. Auto Mechanic II - Three (3) years of experience in motor vehicle repair.Note :
Candidates will be placed at the appropriate level based on qualifications, licensure, and experience. Current vacancies exist in the heavy section; One Auto Mechanic I in Preventive Maintenance Bus (PMB), night shift, and one Auto Mechanic II in Fire & Engineering Fleet, on day shift. Desirable Preference may be given to candidates with experience in one or more of the following: Emergency vehicle repair on fire trucks, fire apparatus, and medic units; Repairing diesel engines (Cummins, Caterpillar, Detroit, or International), transmissions (Allison, Fuller, or Eaton), or hydraulic systems; Performing computerized diagnostic testing to troubleshoot complex engine, mechanical, or electrical problems; Training other mechanics; and/or Possession of National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications, CDL "A" or "B" licensure with endorsements, and/or VA State Safety Inspector License.Special Requirements Background Check :

Applicant must possess a valid driver's license and authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon favorable review of the applicant's driving record.DOT Compliance:
Applicants must provide written consent for Arlington County to obtain from previous employer's information required by Department of Transportation (DOT) agency regulations concerning drug and alcohol testing information. Prior to appointment, the successful applicant must pass a pre-employment alcohol breath test and drug screening and will be subject to drug screening as required by federal, state, and local standards and policies during employment.Licensure/Certification Timeframes :
Applicants must possess or obtain within the specified timeframes of appointment: Class "A" or "B" Commercial Driver's License within the first six (6) months of employment Endorsements within the first nine (9) months of employment: Fire & Engineering Fleet only - Hazardous materials (H) and Tank vehicle (N) School Bus Section only - School Bus (S) and Passenger Carrying (P) VA State Safety Inspector License within the first twelve (12) months of employment (all positions)Work Environment :
Includes exposure to noise, odors, dust, grease, and dirt with extended periods of standing, walking, bending, crouching, and lifting light to very heavy objects and equipment. The worker must be able to exert up to 75 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Workers are required to wear common protective gear or safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, gloves, hearing protection, or hard hats.Note:
Once obtained, the CDL and VA State Safety Inspector License must be kept in good standing throughout the duration of employment.Additional Information Work Hours:
Current vacancies are assigned as follows: Fire & Engineering Fleet (day shift, 6:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday). PMB Fleet (night shift, 2:15 PM to 10:45 PM, Monday through Friday). Position is classified as essential. Employees must be available for seasonal overtime, callback, working on call, during weekends, holidays, and emergencies. $61,568.00 - $94,016.00Annually Automotive Mechanic II :
