Job Description

Position Summary AVFRD is seeking an experienced, highly motivated Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Master Certified Fire Apparatus Mechanic to oversee the maintenance, inspection, repair, diagnostics, and long-term reliability of the department's emergency response fleet. This position is responsible for maintaining mission-critical apparatus that directly impacts firefighter safety and emergency response capability. The successful candidate will possess advanced knowledge of fire apparatus systems, including fire pumps, aerial devices, multiplex electrical systems, hydraulic systems, diesel powertrains, Allison transmissions, emergency warning systems, and NFPA inspection requirements. Working independently from AVFRD's three-bay maintenance facility, this position will help maximize fleet availability, reduce downtime, extend apparatus life cycles, and minimize reliance on outside repair vendors. Key Responsibilities Add the following responsibilities that were not previously emphasized: Perform annual NFPA apparatus inspections and ensure compliance with applicable NFPA standards. Diagnose and repair multiplex electrical systems and computerized apparatus control systems. Inspect, maintain, and repair fire pumps, aerial devices, hydraulic systems, foam systems, and emergency warning equipment. Perform advanced computerized diagnostics on diesel engines, emissions systems, and Allison automatic transmissions. Develop preventative maintenance schedules that maximize fleet availability and reduce lifecycle costs. Reduce dependence on external service vendors by performing in-house repairs whenever practical. Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection documentation, and repair histories. Assist with apparatus specifications and evaluations for future vehicle purchases. Provide technical guidance to department leadership regarding apparatus maintenance trends and replacement planning. Support emergency repairs and after-hours fleet response when operationally necessary. Desired Skills Expand this section to include: Extensive experience maintaining fire apparatus and emergency vehicles. Advanced troubleshooting of multiplex electrical systems. Strong knowledge of hydraulic and aerial systems. Thorough understanding of fire pumps and foam systems. Experience with computerized engine diagnostics and emissions systems. Knowledge of NFPA inspection, testing, and maintenance standards. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple repairs simultaneously. Commitment to firefighter safety, operational readiness, and continuous improvement. Minimum Qualifications Required High school diploma or GED. Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience maintaining heavy-duty emergency vehicles, fire apparatus, commercial trucks, or similar equipment. Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record. Ability to obtain
EVOC I-IV
certification. Virginia State Safety Inspector License or the ability to obtain. Ability to pass background investigation and pre-employment screening. Preferred Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Master Certification Multiple ASE Medium/Heavy Truck Certifications. Manufacturer certifications (Pierce, Hale, Waterous, Allison, Cummins, etc.). Welding and fabrication experience. Commercial Driver's License (CDL). Experience in maintaining municipal or fire department fleets. Virginia Inspector License Highly Preferred Certifications

Compensation Salary Range:
$120,000-$130,000 annually, commensurate with qualifications and experience. AVFRD also offers a competitive benefits package and professional development opportunities.
