Champlain Valley School District (CVSD) is seeking a skilled and reliable Mechanic to join our transportation team. This role is essential for ensuring the safety, compliance, and daily readiness of our school buses and support vehicles. We are looking for a dedicated professional committed to maintaining high standards of fleet safety and preventive maintenance for our students and staff. Primary Responsibilities Perform routine inspections, comprehensive preventive maintenance (PM), and repairs on a diverse district fleet, including school buses, trucks, cars, and tractors. Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical, electrical, and electronic malfunctions on commercial and support vehicles. Conduct necessary vehicle bodywork, fabricate parts/custom attachments, and procure required repair components as directed. Maintain meticulous and accurate service logs, repair records, mileage data, and fuel usage tracking. Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and organized shop environment, complying with all federal and state Department of Transportation (DOT) safety regulations. Operate district vehicles and specialized garage equipment safely under various weather and road conditions. The Ideal Candidate Will Possess An Associate's Degree in automotive/diesel technology or a comparable combination of education and hands-on commercial vehicle maintenance experience (2 to 3 years preferred). A valid Vermont Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record, or the ability to obtain one. Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills with standard shop tools and electronic testing equipment. Ability to work cooperatively with the Transportation Director, staff, and external vendors, while maintaining a high level of independence and dependability. Capacity to meet the physical demands of the role: constant standing, seeing, hearing, and manual dexterity; frequent bending, crouching, pushing/pulling, and lifting. Comfort working in a standard maintenance environment with exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, odors, and machinery noise.
