Job Description
SUMMARY The General Plant Maintenance Technician supports daily operations within a CNC machine shop by maintaining shop cleanliness, managing coolant and oil levels, and ensuring compliance with safety and 5S standards. This role is essential to maintaining a safe, organized, and efficient production environment for machinists and production staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Add and maintain proper coolant levels on all CNC machines. Prepare and mix correct coolant-to-water ratios for each shift. Use a refractometer to measure and verify coolant concentration percentages. Clean and replace machine coolant and oil filters as required. Remove oil from machine filters and properly dispose of waste materials. Top off oil in lubrication, hydraulic and bar feed oil reservoirs on each machine. Remove oil from chip drums using a battery-powered pump prior to staging for disposal. Remove trash and debris from the CNC shop floor on a daily basis. Clean all oil and coolant spills immediately to prevent slip hazards. Mop the entire shop floor and operate a floor scrubber machine as assigned. Use an electric blower to remove small metal chips from around machines and work areas. Maintain indoor and outdoor shop areas according to 5S standards. Clean and maintain outdoor building grounds surrounding the facility. Break down pallets and dispose of or stage them properly. After scrap drum pickups, reorganize and reset the HAZ-MAT staging area to 5S standards. Empty and clean coolant tanks of CNC machines as necessary. Follow all company safety policies and procedures at all times. Properly handle oil, coolant, and hazardous materials in compliance with environmental and safety regulations. Responsible for complying with the rules and regulations set forth by Federal, Local, and State government, LISI Aerospace, and HSE Procedures. Promptly report safety hazards, spills, or unsafe conditions to supervision. Report maintenance needs to Maintenance Mechanics and supervision as required. Other duties may be assigned. Ways of working, Experience, and Behaviors To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies: Ways of Working Performs all tasks with safety as the top priority, consistently following PPE, spill-response, and hazardous material handling procedures. Works from daily, weekly, and shift-based checklists to ensure coolant levels, scrap removal, cleanliness, and 5S standards are consistently maintained. Identifies needs (low coolant, full scrap bins, spills, disorganization) and addresses them without waiting to be directed. Prepares machines, coolant ratios, and shop conditions to support incoming shifts and minimize downtime for machinists. Maintains order, cleanliness, and visual standards across the shop and staging areas, resetting spaces after pickups or disruptions. Works closely with machinists, supervisors, maintenance mechanics and leads to ensure the shop environment enables safe and efficient production. Experience Experience working in a machine shop, manufacturing, or industrial environment. Exposure to CNC machine shop floors and production support activities.Experience handling:
o Coolants, oils, and lubricants o Scrap metal, chip drums, and recycling o Industrial cleaning equipment (floor scrubbers, buffers, blowers) Training can be provided, but prior familiarity shortens ramp-up time. Behaviors Shows up consistently and completes required tasks without reminders. Takes ownership of assigned areas and ensures nothing is left incomplete. Follows through on daily, weekly, and ad-hoc responsibilities. Notices small issues (leaks, spills, low fluid levels, clutter) before they become larger problems. Maintains consistent standards across machines, walkways, and outdoor areas. Treats oil, coolant, scrap, and equipment with care and respect. Understands that shortcuts can create safety and environmental risks. Immediately addresses spills or hazards. Uses proper lifting techniques and PPE correctly at all times. Works efficiently without rushing or creating unsafe conditions. Communicates respectfully with machinists and supervisors. Supports production teams without disrupting workflow. Accepts feedback and adjusts work habits as needed. Adjusts priorities based on production needs, shift changes, or unexpected shop conditions. Willing to assist with additional tasks such as inventory counts or material handling when required. Supervisory Responsibilities No supervisory responsibilitiesESSENTIAL JOB REQUIREMENTS SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Education & Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of 1 year experience in a manufacturing, industrial, or machine shop environment preferred. Experience working around CNC machinery, industrial equipment, or production environments preferred but not required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Ability to understand and comply with Cal/OSHA safety regulations, company safety policies, and environmental procedures. Ability to safely handle and work around oils, coolants, lubricants, metal scrap, and industrial cleaning equipment. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions related to hazardous materials, machine shop housekeeping, and 5S standards. Basic math skills sufficient to measure, mix, and maintain coolant-to-water ratios and perform inventory counts. Ability to learn and correctly use tools and equipment such as refractometers, pumps, floor buffers, blowers, and material handling devices.PHYSICAL DEMANDS, WORK ENVIRONMENT, HEALTH AND SAFETY
Physical Demands Stand and walk for up to 8-10 hours per shift. Frequently bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and crouch. Lift, carry, push, and pull up to 50 pounds on a regular basis. Frequently handle metal scrap bins, recyclable drums, coolant containers, and raw material metal bars. Safely operate around moving CNC machinery and industrial equipment. Use required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times, including steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection, cut-resistant gloves, and oil-resistant gloves. Work Environment Industrial noise levels requiring hearing protection Metal chips and airborne particles Oils, coolants, and lubricants Slippery surfaces when spills occur Safety and Environmental Participate in the development and promotion of the HSE culture Be exemplary in terms of health, safety and the environment, in particular by :- Respecting and ensuring respect for the instructions and rules established in the field of health, safety and the environment (in particular the LISI golden rules)
- Immediately correcting, whenever possible, or reporting to his or her superiors and/or the HSE department, any malfunction or risky situation in the fields of health, safety and environmental protection
- Implementing preventive actions to reduce the environmental footprint and control health and safety risks Participate, upon request, in analyses (of risks, incidents) and HSE working groups related to his/her professional scope Be familiar with the main health and safety risks and the main environmental impacts relating to the scope of his/her work Be familiar with the site's HSE policy and objectives To be able to make proposals for improving working conditions and limiting environmental impact
