JOB DESCRIPTION
This position is responsible for the maintenance and repair of agricultural and industrial equipment across all areas of the harvesting and farming side of the business. It requires extensive knowledge of monitoring, maintaining, repairing, and replacing equipment used for farming, harvesting, irrigation, and transportation to ensure a consistent and reliable production process. This is a non-exempt position. The Maintenance Mechanic Level 1 will perform routine maintenance, repairs, and installations on various equipment and machinery both in the shop and in the field, with a high regard for employee safety. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of mechanical systems, the ability to work with electrical systems, and some fabrication experience
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Performs preventative and predictive maintenance, calibration, and testing of industrial and agricultural equipment.
- Troubleshoots and diagnoses problems, performing major and minor repairs to equipment.
- Joins, fabricates, and repairs metal and other weldable materials using appropriate welding techniques.
- Disassembles, reassembles, repairs, constructs, overhauls, maintains, and installs new and existing equipment, including conveying, hydraulic, and air systems.
- Performs installation, startup, and shutdown of equipment in accordance with company safety procedures.
- Completes required maintenance reports and documentation.
- Trains sanitation team to correctly follow Food Safety SOPs.
- Attends management meetings to share information regarding crops, employees, and issues needing attention.
- Assembles, installs, and tests motor control devices, switch panels, transformers, generator windings, solenoids, and other electrical equipment and components.
- Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
- Prepares sketches showing the location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints, ensuring concealed wiring is installed before completion of walls, ceilings, and flooring.
- Installs power supply and control wiring for newly installed machines and equipment such as conveyor systems.
- Performs uptime and downtime inspections, lubrication, and preventative maintenance on harvest machines, tractors, and trailers.
- Performs DOT inspections according to FMVCSA regulations on truck trailers and buses.
- Troubleshoots and performs corrective work on all mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems.
- Identifies and executes improvements on equipment, documentation, work systems, and processes.
- Provides training and development to operators and other maintenance personnel.
- Research system and component specifications using equipment manuals, schematics, parts breakdowns, online information, and vendor communication.
- Dismantles and reassembles complex machinery efficiently, precisely, and reliably.
- Operates cutting, welding, and various other fabrication equipment to cut, form, and/or join materials.
- Creates/modifies work orders and documents details of work performed.
- Submit parts requests.
- Escalates technical, procedural, and personnel-related issues to direct lead or supervisor as necessary.
- Works with moral integrity on a consistent basis.
- Maintains a safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations.
- Performs other assigned duties and projects.
- Cross trains on other duties to assist the rest of the staff as needed.
SKILL / QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
- High School/GED is preferred but not required.
- 3 years' experience as a journey-level industrial mechanical engineering technician, preferably in an agriculture or food manufacturing environment.
- 2 years' welding experience; fabrication skills preferred but not required.
- Ability to climb onto harvest trailers, low boy trailers, tractors, and other equipment.
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Demonstrated oral and written English communication skills; bilingual English/Spanish preferred but not required.
- Ability to drive a company vehicle and be insurable.
- Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and any assigned shifts.
- Self-motivated.
- Ability to manage priorities, workflow, and coordinate multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Versatility, flexibility, and willingness to work within constantly changing priorities with enthusiasm.
- Ability to perform physical labor necessary to work outdoors in heat, cold, and wet environments.
- Ability to bend, crawl, work under and over equipment, and lift heavy parts.
- Full knowledge of the use of electrical tools such as testers, multimeters, and ammeters.
- Ability to lift up to 60 lbs. throughout the work shift.
- Ability to work in all weather conditions.
- Ability to work while walking on uneven ground or during wet, slippery, or muddy conditions.
- Ability to safely utilize the required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to perform duties that require fine dexterity.
- Ability to follow instructions and abide by all company policies and procedures, including but not limited to general safety policies, food safety policies, good agricultural practices, and labor relations policies (including sexual harassment, discrimination, and bullying).
- Familiarity with basic technology such as smartphones, tablets, portable computers, or other handheld devices.
