Custodian/Facilities Maintenance United Methodist Church of Libertyville Libertyville, IL Job Details Part-time $20 an hour 1 day ago Benefits Flexible schedule Qualifications Project reporting Janitorial experience Cleaning & sanitation management Teamwork High school diploma or GED Driver's License Organizational skills Leading team collaboration initiatives Cleaning equipment Facility security systems Building interior maintenance Time management Full Job Description General Description The Custodian at the United Methodist Church of Libertyville is responsible for maintaining and cleaning the Church building, grounds and parking lot as well as helping maintain the parsonages and their grounds. The Custodian collaborates with and supports the Pastor(s), Trustees, Church staff and congregation. This includes communicating with other church staff and/or volunteers regarding cleaning, necessary repairs, scheduled maintenance, and issues that need to be further investigated. The Custodian will first, on their own, perform tasks related to cleaning, general and preventive maintenance, repair and building projects, HVAC, plumbing, security system, safety and event coordination. If tasks are outside of their skill set, then the Custodian will solicit volunteers from the congregation (with the help of Trustees). Only after exhausting those options, will the Custodian work with the Finance Manager to contract third parties to perform the tasks.
This position requires:
  • General janitorial and maintenance skills
  • General knowledge of cleaning products and tools, HVAC systems, security systems, plumbing, etc.
  • Organizational, collaborative and multi-tasking skills
Core Job Responsibilities:
    General Custodian/ Facilities Maintenance:
    • Develops and executes daily/weekly/monthly cleaning schedules for the Church and monitors routine maintenance for all church properties (includes snow removal and landscaping)
    • Oversee the general care and preventive maintenance of all Church buildings, including grounds, landscaping, and parking lots
    • Works with Finance Manager to oversee required inspections and acts as one of the points of contact to ensure code compliance with all governmental agencies
    • Maintains records for cleaning, maintenance work, repairs and inspections
    • Communicates with church staff/Trustees and those impacted to coordinate timing for cleaning, maintenance work, repairs, inspections, security system; includes immediately informing all trustees by email whenever a significant issue arises concerning the church
    • Works with Finance Manager to arrange for contractors as needed. Priority is for the Custodian to perform repairs personally and/or recruit volunteers
    • Sets up, monitors and deactivates security access when necessary
    • Responsible for keeping costs at a minimum while maintaining the facilities correctly
    • Support the ministries of the church to respond to requests as needed by staff or volunteer leaders to support ministry on church premises.
    Heating/cooling and Security:
    • Maintains security system
    • Monitors the HVAC systems and coordinates service as needed by indicated failures or alerts
    • Work with vendors/contractors/budget:
    • Identifies when other professional service providers are needed and hires with Trustees' approval
    • Works with Finance Manager to ensure cleaning products and tools are included in the budget
    • Works with Finance Manager to contact service providers to schedule routine maintenance and communicate with church staff on timing
    • Works with Finance Manager to monitor all vendors and contractors as they perform maintenance work and major repairs to the Church or parsonages
    • Works with Finance Manager to initiate work with vendors/contractors and monitors their work to complete all annual inspections
    • Oversees vendor responsible for snow removal and ensures all grounds, sidewalks, and parking lots are safe for visitors
    • Provides feedback to vendors regarding quality of service when necessary
    • Work with volunteers:
    • Assists the Trustees with teams of volunteers providing maintenance services such as cleaning, painting and landscaping when needed
    • Develops, trains, and oversees a group of volunteers for "handy man" work, repairs, cleaning etc., as appropriate/needed
    • Collaboration with
    Trustees/Finance Manager:
    • Works with Trustees/Finance Manager to develop budget and ensure services, fees, maintenance, repairs are included and manages work against approved budget
    • Works with the Trustees to report problems, solutions and costs associated with any facilities work and provides status updates on pending work
    • Work with Trustees to prioritize work
    • Works with the Chairman of the Trustee Committee to develop and manage annual facilities and parsonage budgets
    Emergencies:
    • Serves as primary contact for facility-related emergencies, which may require off-hour work
    • Acts as main point of contact to address emergency outages; provides instruction to church staff on process
    • Updates emergency contact lists as needed
    Inspections:
    • Acts as point of contact for external agencies and security company
    • Work with Finance Manager to arrange required inspections (elevator, kitchen, fire alarms/emergency lights, etc.
    )
    Core Competencies:

    General Requirements:
    • High school diploma or equivalent
    • Valid US driver's license and good driving record; must possess own vehicle to commute to and from church and parsonages
    • Familiarity with the working of the church as an organization
    • Prior Custodial or Janitorial experience
    • Experience with building maintenance preferred
    • Proficient at general "handy man" tasks
    • Time management skills and flexibility dealing with changing priorities and emergencies
    • Good organizational and communications skills, both written and verbal
    • Self-motivated and willing to serve
    • Will exhibit Christian ideals and morals
    • Must pass a criminal background check B.
    Interpersonal Skills:
    • Able to work effectively with and collaborate with the Pastor(s), church staff, congregation members, volunteers, musicians, Trustees and other committees
    • Able to lead projects and report status of work
    Work Schedule:
    This position requires 15 - 20 hours a week, including participation in weekly staff meetings and may include work on Sunday and on-call for emergencies.
