POSITION SUMMARY
The Maintenance Apprentice is an entry-level position designed to support the Maintenance Department by assisting with the installation, troubleshooting, repair, and maintenance of production and facility equipment. Under the guidance of experienced Maintenance Technicians, the apprentice will learn to perform preventive maintenance, use basic hand and power tools safely, and follow established safety and maintenance procedures. This position provides on-the-job training in mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems used throughout the bakery facility, preparing the apprentice for advancement to a Maintenance Technician role.
ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist Maintenance Technicians with troubleshooting and repairing production and facility equipment.
  • Observe and learn the function and maintenance of PLC control systems, VFD drives, motor controls, pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance tasks, such as cleaning, lubrication, inspections, and minor repairs under supervision.
  • Help with emergency repairs and equipment changeovers as directed by senior maintenance staff.
  • Learn to read and interpret equipment manuals, work orders, and schematics.
  • Support machine rebuilds, fabrication, and component replacement as part of training assignments.
  • Maintain clean and safe work areas, ensuring compliance with company safety and GMP standards.
  • Follow proper Lockout/Tagout procedures and all safety rules.
  • Assist with maintaining maintenance logs, work records, and preventive maintenance documentation.
  • Learn the proper use and care of tools, meters, and measuring instruments.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Maintenance Manager or lead technician.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Technical training, trade school coursework, or mechanical experience preferred
  • Basic understanding of hand tools, power tools, and measuring devices
  • Ability to use or learn basic computer programs for maintenance recordkeeping (MS Office, CMMS, etc.)
  • Must be willing to participate in company-provided training and skill development
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to walk, bend, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, and climb for extended periods
  • Capable of lifting and/or moving up to 50 lbs safely
  • Must be able to work in varying temperature environments (cold, warm, humid, etc.)
  • Able to stand for long periods and perform repetitive movements when needed
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Must maintain good attendance and follow all company policies and safety procedures
  • Must wear required PPE and follow all GMP standards
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, a positive attitude, and respect for supervisors and team members
  • Will be required to build a personal set of basic hand tools as training progresses (company guidance provided)
GROWTH AND ADVANCEMENT
This position is part of the Maintenance Department's development program. Successful apprentices who demonstrate strong technical ability, reliability, and safety awareness may advance to Junior Maintenance Tech upon completion of training and skills competency evaluation.
