Job Description
Lead Window & Door Installer Bonn Window and Door — Rapid City, South Dakota Position Summary The Lead Window & Door Installer is responsible for leading residential window and door replacement projects from arrival through final walkthrough. This position is accountable for the quality, efficiency, cleanliness, safety, and professionalism of the installation crew and jobsite. The Lead Installer must be capable of independently completing full-frame window and door replacements, identifying and solving installation challenges, directing other crew members, communicating professionally with homeowners, and ensuring every completed project meets Bonn Window and Door's workmanship standards. Success in this role means completing projects correctly the first time, maintaining an organized and professional jobsite, meeting labor expectations, and consistently producing finished work that results in virtually zero preventable callbacks. Primary ResponsibilitiesInstallation & Technical Work Independently perform full-frame residential window replacements. Independently perform entry door and patio door replacements. Safely remove existing windows, doors, trim, and related materials without unnecessary damage to the home. Properly prepare rough openings before installation. Identify rot, water damage, framing problems, improper previous installations, and other unexpected conditions. Determine the appropriate solution when field conditions differ from expectations. Install, level, square, shim, fasten, insulate, flash, seal, and finish windows and doors according to manufacturer requirements and Bonn Window and Door standards. Install interior and exterior trim with clean, tight joints and professional finish quality. Apply caulking and sealants cleanly and correctly. Confirm windows and doors operate, lock, seal, and function properly before considering installation complete. Protect finished surfaces from damage throughout the installation. Recognize situations that require approval before proceeding with additional or out-of-scope work. Crew Leadership Lead and direct installers and helpers throughout the workday. Clearly assign tasks based on each crew member's skill level. Maintain productive workflow and minimize unnecessary downtime. Train less-experienced installers on proper installation methods and company standards. Inspect work completed by other crew members before considering it complete. Correct workmanship issues before leaving the jobsite. Hold crew members accountable for safety, cleanliness, productivity, and quality expectations. Take responsibility for the overall performance of the installation crew. Quality Control The Lead Installer is responsible for the final quality of the entire project, including work completed by other crew members. Before leaving a completed project, the Lead Installer must perform a complete walkthrough and verify: Windows and doors are level, square, secure, and operating properly. Locks, handles, screens, hardware, and accessories function correctly. Interior trim is complete and properly finished. Exterior trim is complete and properly sealed. Caulking is smooth, complete, and visually acceptable. Insulation and weather sealing are complete. Glass, frames, doors, and surrounding surfaces are free of installation-related damage. Manufacturer labels, stickers, packaging, and construction debris are removed as appropriate. All customer concerns identified during the project have been addressed or documented. No unfinished details remain that would create a preventable callback. The expectation is virtually zero callbacks resulting from missed details or preventable workmanship issues. Material & Job Preparation Review the project scope before beginning work. Confirm the correct windows, doors, trim, hardware, and accessories are available for the project. Identify missing, incorrect, damaged, or questionable materials as early as possible. Notify the Production Manager immediately when a material problem could affect the project schedule. Keep materials organized and protected from damage. Identify additional materials needed before they cause unnecessary job delays. Maintain and properly care for company tools and equipment. The Lead Installer should identify material problems before they stop production whenever reasonably possible. Jobsite Management & Cleanliness Protect floors, furniture, landscaping, siding, and surrounding areas before demolition begins. Use drop cloths, plastic, floor protection, and other appropriate protection methods. Keep tools, materials, debris, and work areas organized throughout the day. Maintain a safe and professional jobsite. Clean the work area throughout the installation rather than waiting until the project is complete. Perform a complete jobsite cleanup at the end of every workday . Remove installation debris and dispose of materials properly. Perform a final exterior and interior walkthrough before leaving the completed project. At the end of each day, the customer's home should be left safe, organized, and reasonably usable. Customer Communication The Lead Installer serves as the primary field contact for the homeowner during installation.
Responsibilities include:
Professionally introduce the crew upon arrival. Review the planned work with the homeowner when appropriate. Communicate expected progress and significant changes. Treat the customer's home and property with respect. Avoid discussing internal company problems, employee issues, or unnecessary project complications with customers. Immediately communicate significant customer concerns to management. Answer installation-related questions accurately without making unauthorized promises regarding pricing, warranties, scheduling, or additional work. Complete a final walkthrough with the homeowner when required. Make sure the homeowner understands that any remaining concerns have been documented and communicated. Productivity & Labor Management Complete projects within assigned labor budgets whenever reasonable. Maintain a minimum expected labor efficiency of 75% of budgeted installation hours , except when documented project conditions justify additional time. Keep crew members productively engaged throughout the workday. Identify delays and productivity problems early. Communicate unexpected conditions that will materially affect the labor budget. Balance productivity with workmanship—the project must never be rushed at the expense of proper installation. Safety Follow company safety procedures and applicable OSHA requirements. Require proper use of personal protective equipment. Maintain safe ladder and scaffolding practices. Safely operate saws, power tools, and installation equipment. Keep the jobsite free of unnecessary trip, fall, and debris hazards. Identify unsafe conditions before work continues. Immediately report injuries, property damage, and significant safety incidents. Documentation & Communication With Management Review assigned job information before beginning work. Document unexpected jobsite conditions when required. Take appropriate photographs of problems, damage, completed work, or other requested conditions. Communicate change-order conditions before completing unauthorized additional work. Report damaged or missing materials promptly. Report customer concerns promptly. Communicate project status and completion accurately. Report workmanship or property-damage incidents immediately rather than attempting to conceal or minimize them. Required Skills A successful Lead Window & Door Installer must demonstrate the ability to: Independently replace full-frame windows. Independently replace residential entry and patio doors. Accurately use levels, tape measures, saws, fastening equipment, and standard installation tools. Understand rough openings, shimming, flashing, insulation, water management, and air sealing. Complete professional interior and exterior trim work. Diagnose installation problems and develop practical solutions. Recognize structural or water-related conditions requiring escalation. Lead and train other crew members. Maintain attention to detail throughout an entire project. Communicate professionally with homeowners and coworkers. Plan work ahead rather than simply reacting to problems as they occur. Minimum Qualifications Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record. Reliable attendance and transportation. Ability to safely lift and maneuver windows, doors, tools, and construction materials. Ability to work from ladders and at elevated heights. Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions. Demonstrated residential construction or installation experience. Demonstrated ability to independently complete window and door installations to company standards. Professional Expectations Lead Installers are expected to: Arrive on time and prepared to work. Wear required Bonn Window and Door company apparel. Maintain a professional appearance and attitude around customers. Treat customers, coworkers, subcontractors, and company property respectfully. Use personal phones only when appropriate and without interfering with production. Accurately record working time using the company's designated timekeeping system. Take ownership of mistakes and participate in correcting them. Communicate problems early instead of allowing them to become larger problems. Maintain the standards expected of a premium window and door replacement company. Performance Standards Performance will be evaluated using measurable results including: Workmanship Preventable callback rate. Number of workmanship corrections required after project completion. Accuracy and completeness of final installation. Productivity Actual labor hours compared with budgeted labor hours. Crew productivity and effective use of working hours. Ability to complete projects according to schedule. Jobsite Management Daily cleanup completed. Final cleanup completed. Property damage or preventable safety incidents. Tool and material organization. Planning Missing or incorrect materials identified before they unnecessarily delay production. Problems communicated to management promptly. Job requirements reviewed before installation begins. Leadership Quality of work completed by crew members under the Lead Installer's supervision. Ability to train and develop less-experienced installers. Ability to keep the crew productive without sacrificing workmanship. Customer Experience Professional homeowner communication. Customer complaints related to crew behavior, cleanliness, or installation. Quality and completeness of final walkthroughs. Accountability The Lead Installer is not responsible only for the work completed with their own hands. The Lead Installer is accountable for the finished project as a whole . Before leaving a job, the Lead Installer is expected to be able to confidently say: The installation is complete. The work meets Bonn Window and Door standards. The jobsite is clean. The products operate correctly. The customer has been appropriately communicated with. Any unresolved issue has been documented and reported. Nothing obvious has been overlooked that should require the company to return. What Success Looks Like A successful Lead Window & Door Installer can be assigned a properly prepared project and independently lead the crew through completion with minimal management involvement.They consistently:
