GED Full Job Description Job Summary:
As a Low Voltage Apprentice, you will work under the supervision of experienced technicians and foremen to gain hands-on experience in the installation, maintenance, and testing of structured cabling systems and low voltage electrical components. This position is ideal for individuals looking to build a strong foundation in the low voltage and electrical trades while actively participating in projects involving voice, data, fiber optic, and related systems.
Key Responsibilities:
Installation & System Setup:
Assist in the installation of copper, coaxial, and fiber optic cable in backbone, horizontal, and riser environments. Terminate voice and data jacks; assist with terminations on patch panels and cross-connects. Install and support various low voltage systems, including data networks, fire alarms, and communication systems. Build and install racks, ladder trays, cable supports, and related infrastructure. Perform basic conduit installation tasks including bending and cutting (EMT, PVC, etc.). Pull wire through conduit and support underground and overhead cable runs. Support the installation of devices such as switches, access points, and security components.
Blueprint Reading & Documentation:
Read and interpret construction blueprints, wiring diagrams, and cabling layouts to support accurate installation. Follow detailed project specifications and ensure all installations comply with industry standards and project requirements. Assist in documenting project progress, cable labeling, and testing records.
Safety, Compliance & Job Site Support:
Comply with OSHA, NEC, and company safety protocols at all times. Maintain a clean and organized work area and participate in safety meetings and training. Use hand and power tools safely and efficiently for daily tasks. Assist in firestopping and other site-specific requirements as directed.
Teamwork & Learning:
Work closely with journeymen, field technicians, and foremen to learn best practices and improve technical skills. Be proactive in learning and developing new installation methods and technologies. Demonstrate a positive attitude, strong work ethic, and commitment to continuous improvement.
Education & Certifications:
High school diploma or GED required. Successful, continual participation in Allied Electric's apprenticeship program through completion. Obtain OSHA 10-hour safety certification by the end of the 4th year of apprenticeship.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to occasionally lift objects up to 50 pounds. Must be capable of standing for extended periods, performing repetitive bending and squatting motions, and working in overhead conditions. Ability to work in tight and confined spaces and on ladders or elevated platforms. Ability to travel regionally up to 50% of the time.
Skills & Abilities:
Strong mechanical aptitude and willingness to learn new skills. Proficiency in the use of basic hand and power tools. Demonstrated ability to maintain safe work habits and high productivity. Self-motivated with a commitment to continuous improvement and learning. Ability to adapt to changing tasks and responsibilities as directed by supervisors.
