Independent Contractor (1099) About ATC ATC is a fast paced transportation and logistics company specializing in freight coordination, dispatch, and local delivery across the Northeast. We run a mixed fleet of sprinter vans, box trucks, flatbeds, reefers, and semi trucks across NY, NJ, PA, CT, and MA, and our maintenance is handled in house at our Queens Village shop. Our lead mechanic handles the heavy repairs, and we are adding a helper so the shop can keep pace with the fleet. This is a hands on role for someone who wants to build real diesel experience on a working fleet. Position Overview The Diesel Mechanic Helper works directly alongside our lead mechanic, assisting with repairs and taking ownership of routine maintenance so the lead can stay focused on diagnostics and major jobs. You will get your hands on everything from oil changes and filter swaps to brakes, tires, and transmission work. You do not need to be a fully certified technician. You do need a solid mechanical foundation, a willingness to learn, and the reliability to show up every morning at 7:00 AM ready to work. This role reports to the lead mechanic and the Operations Manager. Key Responsibilities Assist the lead mechanic with transmission swaps, brake jobs, and other major repairs on medium and heavy duty trucks Support diagnostic work by pulling parts, staging tools, and prepping vehicles for repair Perform tire changes and rotations on trucks and trailers Replace headlights, marker lights, and other exterior lighting Perform oil changes and lube service across the fleet Replace fuel, oil, air, and cabin filters on schedule Replenish DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) and top off other fluids Complete basic inspections and flag any issues to the lead mechanic before a truck goes back on the road Keep the shop, tools, and work bays clean and organized Track parts and supplies used and let the lead mechanic know when stock is running low Follow all shop safety practices and use proper lifting and jacking procedures at all times What Success Looks Like Routine maintenance (oil, filters, DEF, tires, lights) is handled without the lead mechanic having to step in Trucks are prepped and staged so major repairs start on time and the lead stays on diagnostics Shop is clean, tools are put away, and parts shortages are flagged before they stall a job Fewer trucks sidelined for preventable issues Qualifications 1 or more years of hands on mechanical experience, whether in a shop, trade school, or a related setting Some diesel background, or strong automotive fundamentals with a real interest in diesel trucks Comfortable with brakes, tires, oil changes, filters, and basic lighting work Able to lift 50 pounds or more, work under trucks, and stay on your feet for a full shift Own a basic set of hand tools (specialty tools and shop equipment provided) Reliable and punctual with consistent Monday through Friday availability Valid driver's license in good standing Must be legally authorized to work in the United States Preferred but Not Required Welding experience Body work experience Minor electrical troubleshooting and repair Experience with medium or heavy duty trucks, trailers, or reefer units ASE certification or diesel technology coursework

$20.00 - $24.00 per hour Expected hours: 40.0 per week
