Operations Manager / Director of Maintenance Position Summary The Diesel Mechanic Supervisor / Shop Manager is responsible for overseeing all maintenance operations for the company's fleet of tractors, trailers, tankers, and support equipment. This role provides leadership to maintenance personnel, ensures compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, and company safety standards, manages preventative maintenance programs, controls maintenance costs, and maintains fleet reliability to support operational goals. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Leadership & Personnel Management Supervise, train, coach, and evaluate diesel technicians and maintenance staff. Schedule shop personnel to ensure adequate coverage for fleet maintenance needs. Conduct performance reviews and implement corrective actions when necessary. Promote a strong safety culture and ensure compliance with company policies. Lead daily shop meetings and coordinate maintenance priorities. Fleet Maintenance Management Oversee preventative maintenance (PM) schedules and repair programs. Ensure timely completion of inspections, repairs, and service work. Prioritize work orders based on safety, operational needs, and equipment availability. Monitor fleet condition and identify opportunities to improve reliability. Coordinate emergency roadside repairs and breakdown response. Compliance & Safety Ensure compliance with DOT, FMCSA, OSHA, EPA, and company regulations. Maintain accurate maintenance records and documentation. Manage annual inspections and regulatory compliance requirements. Investigate maintenance-related incidents and implement corrective actions. Conduct shop safety audits and equipment inspections. Inventory & Vendor Management Manage parts inventory and control maintenance expenses. Establish relationships with vendors and negotiate pricing when appropriate. Approve parts purchases and outside repair services. Monitor inventory levels to minimize downtime while controlling costs. Budget & Performance Management Develop and manage maintenance budgets. Track key performance indicators (KPIs) including: Fleet uptime PM compliance Road call frequency Maintenance cost per mile Technician productivity Equipment availability Analyze maintenance trends and implement continuous improvement initiatives. Qualifications Required High school diploma or GED. Minimum 5 years of diesel maintenance experience. Minimum 2 years of supervisory or leadership experience. Strong knowledge of Detroit diesel engines, electrical systems, brakes, suspension, and trailer maintenance. Knowledge of
DOT/FMCSA
regulations and maintenance compliance requirements. Ability to read and interpret repair manuals and diagnostic information. Strong computer skills and experience with maintenance management software. Preferred ASE certifications. CDL Class A license or ability to obtain. Experience with tanker, bulk liquid, or hazardous materials transportation equipment. Experience managing maintenance budgets and fleet performance metrics.
