Minimum Education & Experience ' High School Diploma or GED required ' Minimum of 3 years of hands on experience as a diesel and gasoline mechanic, preferably in fleet, transportation, or heavy equipment environments ' Experience with school buses or commercial vehicles preferred ' Valid driver's license required Technical Skills ' Proficiency in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining diesel and gas engines, including electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems ' Ability to use diagnostic tools, scan equipment, and standard shop tools safely and effectively ' Knowledge of preventive maintenance schedules and state/federal safety requirements for school buses ' Ability to complete required inspections (daily, monthly, annual) in compliance with state transportation regulations ' Basic computer skills for logging work orders, time, and maintenance records Work Habits & Professional Expectations ' Strong ability to self manage time and workload, including prioritizing urgent repairs ' Reliable and punctual, with consistent attendance ' Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain repairs or safety concerns clearly to supervisors and drivers ' Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as collaboratively with the transportation team ' Commitment to safety, following all shop, district, and state safety protocols Physical Expectations ' Will lift 50+ pounds, bend, kneel, climb, and work in tight spaces ' Will work in varying weather conditions when repairs must be done outdoors ' Will operate buses and district vehicles for testing and transport Licensing & Certifications (optional but recommended) ' CDL with school bus endorsement or willingness to obtain within a set timeframe ' ASE certifications in diesel, brakes, electrical, or school bus specialties preferred Other Important Requirements ' Must maintain accurate documentation of all repairs, inspections, and parts used ' Must follow district policies regarding student safety, confidentiality, and conduct ' Willingness to respond to occasional after hours call outs (if this applies in your shop) ' Must pass background check and drug screening, per school district requirements Day shift
