POSITION SUMMARY

Performs intermediate technical work in the maintenance and repair of all types of County gas and diesel automotive and construction equipment. Maintains records and files. Work is performed under the regular supervision of a Senior Diesel Mechanic.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Maintains and repairs variety of gas and diesel automotive and construction equipment Changes oil and filter; lubricates fittings; checks fluid levels Checks belts, hoses and air filters; checks brakes and related assemblies; checks all electrical components Inspects tires, frame work, mounting brackets, etc. Tests equipment and vehicles after service for proper operation Removes and disassembles engines, manual transmissions and rear ends; repairs worn and faulty parts; reassembles and re-installs repaired parts Replaces hydraulic lines, pumps, gear boxes, drive shafts, bearings and exhaust systems Replaces brake pads and shoes; turns rotors and drums; inspects and replaces calipers and wheel cylinders Replaces alternators and starters; rewires and secures faulty electrical connections and harnesses Replaces faulty A/C compressors, accumulators, evaporators, condensers, etc.; recharges system and checks for leaks Performs general repair to trash compactors, dozers, loaders, track hoes, pans, dump trucks, tractors, backhoes and bush hogs Repairs airbrakes, hydraulic hoses and electrical systems Performs emergency touring and retrieval services for vehicles; performs emergency maintenance and repair of equipment and vehicles at job sites Identifies, labels and records impounded vehicle serial numbers; stores impounded vehicle in proper and secure storage areas Maintains written records on all activities performed Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

General knowledge of the standard practices and tools of the diesel mechanic trade; general knowledge of the principles of operation of gasoline and diesel engines; general knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions; ability to adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems; skill in the use and care of hand and machine tools employed in motor repair and adjustment work; skill in adjusting defects in diesel equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school supplemented by courses in diesel mechanics and considerable experience as an automotive mechanic including experience with diesel engines. LICENSE / CERTIFICATION and

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

All regular full-time and part-time employees of Spartanburg County are required by state law to participate in the South Carolina Retirement System. Required valid Class B Commercial Driver's License issued in South Carolina. Possession of Air Conditioning Recovery and Recycling Certification is preferred. •
