Substation Technician Apprentice I City of Lubbock, TX - 3.6 Lubbock, TX Job Details Full-time $55,889.60 a year 12 hours ago Qualifications High school diploma or GED Non-CDL Class C Driving Full Job Description Summary Assist in constructing, energizing, troubleshooting, testing protective relaying and control schemes, and maintaining NERC Compliance in substations and transmission systems, including SCADA system that monitors status, telemetry, and control the electric distribution and transmission systems. Assist in the installation, testing, maintenance, operation and modification of the communication processors and equipment, battery systems, fiber optic multiplexers, substation equipment, metering system. Essential Functions Assists with construction, maintenance and the operation of all aspects related to Electric Substations; Assists other electric utility substation technicians in safely installing, repairing, and maintaining electrical equipment, and SCADA in substations; Assists substation technicians in construction of substations and the commissioning of new stations; Assists with breaker maintenance, testing, change outs and additions; Assists with relay maintenance, testing, change outs and additions, including maintenance and testing to maintain NERC compliance; Assists with transformer maintenance, testing, change outs and additions; Assists with performing battery maintenance to maintain NERC compliance; Assists with installing security for the stations and control buildings; Assist in the pulling and terminating of control wiring in control house and switchgear; Assist in the installation, preparation, and termination of fiber optic cables, including OPGW and ADSS; Assists in specific work techniques to assure tasks are accomplished in a safe, efficient manner; Complies with and follows departmental safety adherence to safety rules and regulations; Readily available and willing to perform periodic overtime work; Portrays a positive image to employees, customers, developers, contractors and the general public at all times; Regular and punctual attendance; Demonstrates CPR, First Aid and ability to perform bucket truck rescue, confined space rescue, and to follow all City safety rules and regulations; Performs other duties as assigned. Qualifications Completion of a High School Diploma or GED equivalent Must have a valid Class "C" Driver's License prior to employment Must obtain a Texas Class "A" CDL driver's license within 60 days of employment •
Critical Infrastructure:
This position has been determined to have close contact with, or control of Critical Infrastructure components. This position is subject to extensive background checks and random drug screening. •
Knowledge and Abilities Knowledge of:
Basic knowledge of general Substation construction and maintenance procedures; Basic knowledge of Substation safety regulations; Microsoft Office including Excel and Word and other programs associated with maintaining a substation or substation equipment.
Ability to:
Work with and assist electric utility substation crews in the safe construction and maintenance of the electric substation system; Learn relay systems, automatic changeover devices, control and printed circuits, supervisory control systems, fiber optics, and voltage regulating devices; Work with oil and oil filled equipment ; Work within enclosed spaces; Read, understand, and follow departmental safety rules and safe work procedures; Work courteously with other employees and customers.
Physical Requirements:
Frequently stand and walk during the shift; Frequently climb ladders, stairs, and inclined surfaces; Comfortably work at heights up to 50 feet; Frequently bend and kneel to read meters and pick up tools; Continuously lift up to 25 pounds, frequently lift up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift up to 100 pounds; Frequently push and pull objects such as wire and panels; Frequently flex upper trunk forward at the waist and flex at the knees in order to work in manholes, lift meters, and lift tools; Frequently rotate upper trunk to the right or left while sitting or standing; Frequently reach above, at, and below should height; Coordinate eye, hand, and foot movement in order to drive and operate equipment.
