Field Service Engineer Job Description The Field Service Engineer provides on-site and remote support for electronic test systems, including installation, modification, testing, maintenance, and repair. This role serves as the first point of contact for customer support needs and requires strong technical expertise, advanced problem-solving skills, and the ability to lead and mentor junior team members. The engineer ensures equipment operates safely and reliably while delivering a high level of customer service. Responsibilities Perform on-site installation, repair, and testing of electronic test equipment by following established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines to ensure proper working order. Provide technical support to internal and external customers via phone and email, diagnosing issues and recommending effective solutions. Isolate equipment start-up malfunctions, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions to restore full functionality. Train customer personnel in basic equipment operation and routine maintenance responsibilities to support safe and efficient use of systems. Document all tasks performed during visits to customer sites, including work performed, parts used, and recommendations for future service. Train, assist, and provide guidance to junior team members during advanced troubleshooting situations, supporting their technical development. Log service requests in the appropriate systems and coordinate with junior team members to ensure timely and accurate resolution of customer issues. Communicate status updates and resolutions to all relevant parties, ensuring that each service request is brought to final closure. Maintain and modify departmental documents, procedures, and records under the direction of a senior team member to support continuous improvement. Process incoming and outgoing Return Material Authorizations (RMAs) within the ERP system, ensuring accurate tracking and documentation. Use electronic test equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters to troubleshoot and verify system performance. Work with schematics, diagrams, and layouts to diagnose electrical, electronic, and pneumatic issues in complex systems. Support systems involving AC power, pneumatic components, and heating or cooling elements as needed. Travel domestically and internationally, up to approximately 25% of the time, to support customer installations, maintenance, and repairs. Work extended hours when required to meet customer needs and complete critical service activities. Perform other related duties as assigned to support the service team and overall business objectives. Essential Skills Associate degree in Electronics or a related field, or completion of an equivalent certificate program; an equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered. Approximately three years of relevant experience in field service, electronic test systems, or a closely related technical role. Ability to read and work from schematics, diagrams, and layouts to diagnose and repair electronic and electromechanical systems. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently in the field and make sound technical decisions. Effective verbal and written communication skills to interface professionally with customers and internal stakeholders. Hands-on experience using hand tools, multimeters, and oscilloscopes for troubleshooting and testing. High attention to detail with strong follow-through to complete tasks accurately and on time. Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word and Excel. Experience working with ERP or CRM software such as SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, INFOR, or similar systems. Ability and willingness to work extended hours as required to support customer needs. Willingness to travel domestically and internationally up to 25% of the time. Possession of a valid driver's license and access to a personal motor vehicle. Possession of, or eligibility to obtain, a valid passport for international travel. Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds as part of routine field service work. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with three-phase AC power systems. Experience with pneumatic systems and related components. Experience with PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) controls. Experience with heating and refrigeration systems, including cooling and refrigerant-based equipment. Familiarity with oscilloscopes, multimeters, and other electronic test instruments beyond basic use. Exposure to working with complex electronic test systems in a field service or industrial environment. Comfort with logging and managing service requests and RMAs within an ERP system. Interest in mentoring and supporting junior team members during troubleshooting and service activities. Work Environment This role is primarily field-based and involves working at customer sites as well as in office or shop environments. The Field Service Engineer works with electronic test systems, AC power equipment, pneumatic components, and heating and cooling systems, using tools such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, and standard hand tools. The position requires regular use of computers, Microsoft Office, and ERP or CRM systems to document work, log service requests, and process RMAs. Travel is an integral part of the job, with domestic and international trips up to approximately 25% of the time. The work may occasionally require extended hours to meet customer deadlines or support critical installations and repairs. The organization is busy and expanding, with a new facility being built in the Plymouth/Maple Grove area, offering a growing, dynamic environment where field service professionals can develop their skills and contribute to a modern, evolving operation. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Minneapolis, MN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $32.00 - $36.00/hr.
