Job Description

Field Service Engineer (Alexandria, VA) Alexandria, VA Full-time Full-time Please note, this position requires your ability to travel internationally and throughout the United States About Us At Nanoscience Instruments , we market, sell, and service sophisticated, mostly bench-top scientific instrumentation. Our products are utilized by universities, government labs, technology startups, and multinational corporations across the US and Canada. We enable innovation by providing complex instrumentation that facilitates scientists in processing and investigating molecular interactions down to the nanoparticle size. We are currently seeking a Field Service Engineer to perform hands-on repairs and maintenance out of our Alexandria, VA office. Duties will include roughly 50% travel for on-site service and constant customer communication. We hire service engineers who are intellectually curious, hands-on, and natural problem solvers. Our products encompass technologies across physics, electronics, and mechanical systems. You will learn to support instrumentation including Scanning Electron Microscopes (SEMs), Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) devices, Electrospinning equipment, and more. This position involves direct interaction with scientists and engineers at customer locations, providing exposure to some of the most exciting research in the world today.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Maintenance & Testing:
Conduct preventative maintenance on complex instruments and follow testing procedures to ensure proper working operation
Diagnostics & Repair:
Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair scientific instruments as required
On-Site Travel:
Conduct on-site maintenance visits across the US and Canada (roughly 50% travel, including occasional weekend travel)
Global Training:
Some technical training sessions may be required at international vendor locations (e.g., The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland and others)
Remote Support:
Provide troubleshooting and repair support for customers via phone, email, and remote connection software
Relationship Building:
Cultivate and develop positive working relationships with customers, system users, and company personnel
Documentation:
Complete and submit detailed service reports in a timely manner
Cross-Team Collaboration:
Work with factory-based Technical Support teams worldwide to identify and isolate unique problems
Customer Training:
Work alongside Nanoscience Application Scientists to learn best practices and perform basic customer training on equipment operation and maintenance Qualifications To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Education:
Possess (or be actively working toward) an engineering degree (e.g., Electrical or Mechanical) or have equivalent demonstrable experience with electronic/mechanical systems in lieu of a degree
Technical Experience:
Prior experience working on complex systems or working in a field service role
Specialized Familiarity:
Comfort working with high-value scientific equipment, specifically
Scanning Electron Microscopes Software Literacy:
Proficient and literate in Windows software environments
Soft Skills:
Customer-facing experience in a technical role is a major plus
Citizenship:
Must be a US Citizen and not now or in the future require visa sponsorship (required for specific government lab site access)
Travel Flexibility:
Willingness and ability to travel internationally and throughout the United States (50% travel required)
