Job Description
Field Service Technician - Entry Level (Power & Substation Systems) Launch Your Career in Power & Electrical Infrastructure Looking to build a hands-on career in electrical power systems? As an Entry-Level Field Service Technician , you'll gain real-world experience working on the critical infrastructure that keeps utilities, data centers, and industrial facilities powered and running safely. This is a field-based, travel role designed for motivated technicians who want to learn, grow, and develop into senior or leadership-level positions in electrical testing and commissioning. What You'll Learn & Do You'll work alongside experienced technicians while supporting maintenance testing, acceptance testing, and commissioning of electrical power equipment in substations and industrial environments.
Key responsibilities include:
Assist with mechanical and electrical work on power transmission, distribution, and generation equipment Learn to read and interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals Support troubleshooting, repair, cleaning, and replacement of substation components Assist with testing of: Transformers (power factor, TTR, insulation resistance, winding resistance, and more) Cables (insulation resistance, hipot, tan delta, TDR, partial discharge) Circuit breakers (timing, contact resistance, insulation resistance, SF6 analysis, CT testing) Support maintenance testing, acceptance testing, and commissioning activities on customer projects Apply and learn industry standards includingNETA, NFPA
70E, OSHA, and DOT Participate in safety meetings and hands-on training—safety is a top priority Travel with team members (and eventually independently) to project sites for multi-day assignments Respond to emergency service calls as part of a rotating on-call schedule (with training and support) Collaborate closely with senior technicians and project teams while building technical skills What We're Looking For Required / Ideal Background 0-2+ years of experience in electrical, industrial, military, utility, or field service environments Strong interest in electrical power systems, substations, and field work Basic understanding of electrical principles and safety practices Comfort working with tools and technical equipment Ability to read or willingness to learn how to read schematics and wiring diagrams Willingness to travel, work overtime, and support night or weekend work as projects require Eagerness to learn, take direction, and grow into more advanced responsibilities Education Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Electrical Technology, Electronic Technology, or a related field OR Equivalent military electrical or technical experience Nice to Have (Not Required) Exposure to substation equipment or electrical testing NETA-related experience or interest in pursuing NETA certification Experience with industrial, utility, data center, or power-related environments Experience with electrical testing software (training provided) Why This Is a Great Entry-Level Role Hands-on training alongside experienced field technicians Clear career path into advanced technician and leadership roles Exposure to major industries including utilities and data centers Work that matters —supporting critical power infrastructure Opportunity to build highly marketable technical skills early in your career Work Environment & Benefits Field-based role working in substations, power plants, and industrial facilities Typical schedule: Monday-Friday, 7:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. , with overtime as needed Frequent travel with overnight, multi-day assignments Per diem at federal rates for lodging and meals Company credit card for travel and work-related expenses Option for company vehicle with fuel card or personal vehicle stipend and fuel reimbursement Comprehensive benefits including: Paid time off and paid holidays Health and retirement benefits Strong culture focused on safety, training, and professional development Fast-growing organization with long-term stability and recurring client work Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Robinson, IL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $35.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
