Job Description

Field Service Technician Charleston, South Carolina, United States Apply for this job Field Service Technician Position Overview A well established industrial equipment organization serving essential infrastructure and process industries is seeking an experienced Field Service Technician to support customers throughout the United States. This position is responsible for commissioning, inspecting, troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing engineered rotating equipment and related industrial systems. The role is well suited for a field service professional who enjoys solving mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and controls problems in customer environments. The technician will serve as a trusted technical resource onsite, helping customers understand equipment condition, identify root causes of performance issues, and determine appropriate service solutions. Professional Responsibility and Scope The Field Service Technician will take ownership of service assignments from initial preparation through completion. Responsibilities include equipment startup and commissioning, preventive maintenance, mechanical inspection, repair, equipment disassembly and assembly, failure evaluation, and root cause diagnosis. The position also involves working with industrial instrumentation, electrical and pneumatic connections, PLC based controls, and industrial communication networks. Technicians will interpret engineering drawings, process diagrams, control documentation, wiring information, and service procedures to complete assignments safely and accurately. Customer interaction is an important part of the position. The technician will communicate service findings, explain repair recommendations, provide progress updates, identify future maintenance needs, and provide equipment training when appropriate. Detailed service documentation, repair findings, commissioning data, expense reporting, and other field documentation must be completed accurately and promptly. The technician may also support engineering teams with equipment modifications, system design considerations, and operational safety reviews. Location and Lifestyle Context This is a United States based field service position involving more than 50 percent travel. Overnight travel may occasionally be required with limited notice depending on customer needs and service conditions. The travel schedule is generally concentrated during the traditional workweek, with weekends typically spent at home when project requirements permit. Candidates who enjoy variety, independence, customer interaction, and working in different industrial environments may find the travel pattern particularly appealing. Long Term Professional Growth This position provides significant opportunity to deepen expertise in rotating equipment, industrial controls, instrumentation, commissioning, diagnostics, and root cause analysis. As technical knowledge develops, the technician can become a trusted resource for increasingly complex customer situations, contribute more directly to engineering and system improvement discussions, and expand into advanced technical service or broader field leadership responsibilities. The organization also supports continued professional development through educational assistance and exposure to a wide range of industrial applications. Compensation The anticipated annual base compensation range is $65,000 to $95,000, depending on experience and technical capability. The compensation package also includes an incentive opportunity through profit sharing. Additional benefits include comprehensive employer sponsored health coverage, retirement plan contributions, educational assistance, and other programs designed to support employees and their families. Team Environment and Leadership Approach The service organization operates with a collaborative approach that gives experienced technicians meaningful independence in the field while providing access to engineering, management, and technical resources when needed. Successful technicians are expected to communicate openly, exercise sound judgment, maintain strong safety practices, and represent the organization professionally with customers. The environment favors individuals who are curious about equipment performance, willing to investigate problems thoroughly, and comfortable taking responsibility for resolving customer issues. Organizational Stability and Industry Position The employer is an established industrial equipment organization supporting customers across essential infrastructure and process industries. Its equipment and service capabilities are used in applications where continuous operation, technical performance, and responsive field support are important. The diversity of customer applications provides technicians with exposure to a broad range of operating environments while helping support long term demand for field service expertise. Experience and Qualification Summary Qualified candidates should bring an associate degree in electronics technology, industrial technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience. More than four years of field service and repair experience involving rotating equipment is strongly preferred. Candidates should be comfortable troubleshooting mechanical equipment as well as industrial electrical, instrumentation, and controls systems. Experience interpreting process diagrams, control wiring, engineering drawings, and equipment documentation is important. Familiarity with PLC systems, ladder logic programming, industrial communication networks, and control system troubleshooting is highly desirable. Strong planning, organization, documentation, customer communication, and analytical problem solving skills are essential. Experience with industrial fabrication or welding processes is beneficial but not required. Candidates must be comfortable traveling more than 50 percent of the time and working independently at customer locations while maintaining established safety and quality standards. Apply for this job
