This role is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, diagnosis, and repair of CDL trucks, roll-off trucks, trailers, and heavy construction equipment. This is a hands-on position that plays a critical role in ensuring company vehicles and equipment operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with state and federal regulations. The ideal candidate has strong experience with diesel engines, air brake systems, hydraulics, electrical systems, and emissions diagnostics, along with the ability to troubleshoot complex mechanical issues. This role requires a proactive approach to preventive maintenance and the ability to respond quickly to equipment issues to minimize downtime and support field operations. Key Responsibilities Maintenance & Repairs Perform routine, scheduled, and preventive maintenance on CDL trucks, roll-off trucks, trailers, and heavy equipment. Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems. Inspect, service, and repair diesel engines, transmissions, steering systems, suspensions, and drivetrains. Maintain and repair air brake systems, including compressors, valves, chambers, and lines. Service and repair A/C systems on diesel and heavy-duty equipment. Inspections & Compliance Conduct safety inspections to ensure equipment complies with DOT, OSHA, and applicable regulations. Identify and resolve mechanical or safety concerns before equipment is returned to service. Prepare vehicles and equipment for inspections and compliance audits. Field & Emergency Support Respond to on-site equipment breakdowns and perform repairs in the field when required. Communicate equipment status, repair timelines, and recommendations to supervisors and operations staff. Documentation & Inventory Document maintenance and repair work performed, including parts used and diagnostic findings. Assist with monitoring parts inventory, tools, and shop supplies. Recommend repairs, replacements, or upgrades based on equipment condition. Shop Safety & Organization Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment. Properly use and maintain shop tools and diagnostic equipment. Follow all company safety policies, PPE requirements, and shop procedures. Qualifications 5+ years of diesel or heavy equipment mechanic experience Advanced diagnostic experience including: Electrical systems CAN networks Drivability diagnostics Aftertreatment / emissions systems Strong working knowledge of: Diesel engines Air brake systems Hydraulics Electrical systems Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, and diagnostic data Experience in a construction, transportation, or equipment shop environment preferred Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to work independently Reliable, detail-oriented, and committed to quality workmanship Willingness to work weekends or respond to after-hours calls if needed Valid driver's license required (clean driving record preferred) Education & Certifications High school diploma or equivalent required Technical or vocational training in diesel or heavy equipment mechanics preferred CDL license preferred but not required Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and small equipment (training available) Physical Requirements Ability to lift and carry 50-75 lbs regularly Work performed primarily in a shop and yard environment Exposure to outdoor weather, noise, grease, dust, and construction materials Requires prolonged standing, bending, kneeling, and physical labor About Desert Services Desert Services provides essential construction site support services across the Phoenix area.
