PRINCIPAL DUTIES
(Illustrative Only) Diagnoses, troubleshoots, inspects, and repairs heavy-duty construction and maintenance vehicle and equipment systems and subsystems. The majority of the work (approximately 80%) relates to preventative maintenance inspection in the following areas: Engine repair Automatic transmission/transaxle Manual drive train and axles Suspension and steering Brakes Electrical/electronic systems Heating and air conditioning Engine performance and driveability Reads and interprets schematics, shop manuals, and plans in performing work assignments. Operates a variety of hand, power, and shop tools. Operates and maintains a variety of electrical/electronic instruments and diagnostic equipment, including diagnostic scopes, gas analyzers, dynamometers, and multimeters. Performs welding and fabrication work. Utilizes personal computers to download manufacturers' recommended software and searches the Internet for sources related to the work. Completes a variety of reports related to the work. Performs related duties as assigned.Education/Experience :
Possession of a high school diploma or GED and one of the following: Four (4) years of experience with the City of Stockton as a Mechanic I, or Successful completion of a recognized four-year apprenticeship program in heavy duty truck/equipment repair, or Four (4) years of experience at a heavy duty truck/equipment repair shop, at a level equivalent to the City of Stockton Mechanic I, or Successful completion of a heavy duty truck/equipment program at an accredited college automotive program or trade school and two (2) years of experience at a level equivalent to the City of Stockton Mechanic I class.Other Requirements :
Must obtain a valid California Class A driver's license and adhere to DOT regulations by the end of the probationary period as a condition of continuing employment. Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the job, including sufficient strength and stamina to lift and remove or install parts weighing up to 50 pounds. Must be able and willing to work evening, night, and/or weekend shifts.Knowledge of :
Methods, techniques, parts, tools, and materials used in maintaining and repairing a wide variety of motorized vehicles and equipment and their related systems and components, including simple and complex hydraulic systems, welding, and fabrication; Structural design and metallurgy relating to the repair, modification, installation, and fabrication needs of vehicles and equipment; Simple and complex automotive diagnostic equipment; Hand, power, and shop tools and electrical/electronic instruments (such as diagnostic scopes, gas analyzers, dynamometers, and multimeters) commonly used in the trade; Shop mathematics; Personal computers and the Internet; and Safe work practices, methods, and regulations pertaining to the repair of fleet vehicles and equipment. Skill in : Diagnosing, maintaining, installing, modifying, and repairing a wide variety of gasoline, diesel, and or alternatively fueled vehicles and related equipment used by City departments; Operating a variety of hand, power, and shop tools and electrical/electronic instruments; Installing electrical and electronic systems; Reading and interpreting manuals, specifications, and drawings Understanding and applying shop mathematics; Using the Internet as an information resource; Preparing a variety of reports related to the job; Exercising sound, independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines; Understanding and following written and oral instructions; Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of the work; Working both independently and within a group to deliver products that may require both environments to complete; and Performing related work as assigned.The Examination:
Applicants who qualify in terms of relevant work experience and education, that best fit the needs of the City , will be invited to participate in the examination process. The examination process may include a written, oral, and/or practical examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination.
