Job Description

Job Title:
Heavy Equipment Mechanic Job Summary:
We are seeking a Heavy Equipment Mechanic to analyze, repair, rebuild, and maintain a wide variety of heavy power equipment. The successful candidate will work on machinery such as cranes, power shovels, scrapers, bulldozers, pumps, and pneumatic tools. This role involves operating and inspecting equipment to diagnose defects, performing all levels of maintenance, and ensuring all machinery operates efficiently and safely. Work is performed under general supervision with spot checks for quality and adherence to standards. Essential Functions & Responsibilities Analyze malfunctions and perform repairs on heavy power equipment. Operate and inspect machines to diagnose defects. Dismantle, reassemble, and replace defective engines and sub-assemblies (e.g., transmissions) using hoists and hand tools. Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using precision tools like micrometers and gauges. Perform welding on broken parts and structural members. Test overhauled equipment to ensure operational efficiency. Repair, adjust, and maintain specialized mining machinery. Safely operate and maintain government, leased, and company-owned vehicles for testing missions and range setups. Follow commercial repair manuals, technical orders, and accepted trade practices. Potentially direct other workers in cleaning parts and assisting with assembly/disassembly. Other Duties Performs other duties as assigned, including but not limited to: General housekeeping of work areas. Washing and waxing of vehicles. Inventory of parts and supplies. Education and Experience Requirements Requires specialized training plus five years of applicable experience. Must possess basic computer abilities for completing training, timesheets, forms, parts lists, and other computer-related functions, in addition to handling paper documentation. May be required to be trained and certified in asbestos, hexavalent chromium, and radioactive gauges inspection and removal. May be required to handle hazardous materials and hazardous waste.
Other Requirements Security Clearance:
This position requires a Secret security clearance. Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
Licensing:
May be required to obtain a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with endorsements to operate fuel trucks and other vehicles.
Policy & Process:
Observes company Quality, Safety, Environmental, Security, and Administrative policies; supports Process Improvement and EOM-S operational objectives.
Hazardous Materials:
May be required to work with hazardous materials and/or collect hazardous waste. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Required to use, maintain, and safeguard any and all issued PPE.
Knowledge and Skills Technical Expertise:
Proficient in troubleshooting and repairing diesel/gasoline engines, as well as mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
Equipment Operation:
Ability to operate a diverse range of heavy equipment safely and effectively.
Diagnostic Skills:
Strong ability to diagnose mechanical issues through inspection and operation.
Maintenance Knowledge:
Capable of performing all levels of shop and field maintenance.
Safety Compliance:
Must adhere to all safety protocols for vehicle and equipment operation.
Work Environment & Physical Demands Conditions:
Works both inside and outside while operating and maintaining equipment. Subjected to various environmental conditions, including work areas that may be dirty, greasy, and noisy.
Physical Effort:
Requires significant physical effort, including crawling, bending, stooping, standing, and working in various strained positions for considerable periods. Pulling or pushing of heavy assemblies may be required.
Coordination:
