The Long County Board of Commissioners is currently accepting applications for the position of Lead Equipment Operator / Road Crew Supervisor with the Long County Road Department. This position performs lead work in the operation of light, medium, and heavy equipment used in the maintenance and repair of county roads, rights-of-way, and drainage systems. Responsibilities include operating heavy equipment, assisting with the training and supervision of road department personnel, maintaining and repairing roads and drainage systems, and performing other departmental duties as assigned. Applicants should have experience in road maintenance and heavy equipment operation and must be able to perform physically demanding work in varying outdoor conditions. A valid Georgia driver's license, or the ability to obtain one, is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is preferred but not required. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of a drug screening and background check. Applicants must also provide a three-year Motor Vehicle Report (MVR).

JOB SUMMARY
This position is responsible for performing lead work in the operation of a variety of light, medium and heavy equipment to repair and maintain county roads, rights-of-way, and drainage systems.
MAJOR DUTIES
o Performs lead work in road repair and maintenance with the use of light, medium, and heavy equipment. o Assists the supervisor in training and monitoring the work of department equipment operators to ensure accuracy and completeness of work assignments. o Performs the duties of the Road Superintendent in his or her absence. o Cleans and maintains roadside drainage systems. o Installs drainage pipes o Grades dirt roads. o Hauls dirt and gravel to repair roads. o Patches roads. o Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader, bulldozer, pan, dump truck, backhoe and motor grader. o Performs daily check of oil and fluid levels and tires on equipment and machinery; performs minor repairs as needed. o Performs other related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
o Knowledge of county policies and procedures pertaining to road and drainage system maintenance and repair. o Knowledge of techniques for achieving grade, drainage and proper compaction. o Knowledge of road construction and maintenance techniques. o Knowledge of departmental safety rules and regulations. o Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of a variety of equipment. o Skill in operating heavy equipment such as a dump truck, motor grader, pan, backhoe, and bulldozer. o Skill in oral and written communication.
SUPERVISORY CONTROLS
The Road Superintendent assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.
GUIDELINES
Guidelines include state Department of Transportation road maintenance and traffic guidelines, county and department policies and procedures, and supervisory instructions. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.
COMPLEXITY
The work consists of related duties in constructing and maintaining county roads and drainage systems. Inclement weather and heavy traffic conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.

The work is typically performed outdoors. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and inclement weather. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles or gloves.
SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY
This position has functional supervision over Equipment Operators, Truck Drivers, and Road Maintenance Workers.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
o Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education. o Experience sufficient to thoroughly understand the work of subordinate positions to be able to answer questions and resolve problems, usually associated with one to three years experience or service. o Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

$20.00 - $24.00 per hour
