How You'll Contribute As a Mechanic II, you'll serve as a key technical resource in maintaining and restoring the City's vehicles and heavy equipment to safe, reliable operating condition by independently diagnosing complex issues and performing advanced repairs, overhauls, and fabrications. You'll apply your deep mechanical knowledge across engine, transmission, hydraulic, air, and electrical systems, while efficiently using shop equipment and diagnostic tools to deliver timely, high-quality service. Through accurate recordkeeping, coordination of parts and materials, final testing of vehicles before return to service, and a strong commitment to safety and customer service, you'll help ensure fleet readiness and support the uninterrupted delivery of essential City services. Diagnose, adjust, repair, and service a wide variety of City vehicles and heavy equipment Perform engine and transmission overhauls and complete advanced mechanical repairs Repair and maintain air, hydraulic, and electrical systems Fabricate assemblies and accessories using welding and cutting equipment Operate shop equipment and computerized diagnostic tools to support accurate and efficient repairs Test drive vehicles and equipment and complete final inspections before returning them to service Maintain accurate records of repairs performed and parts used, and order parts and materials as needed Provide timely and accurate responses to service requests while maintaining a clean, safe, and organized work environment Other Duties as Assigned Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Thorough knowledge of the construction, operation, repair, and adjustment of light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles and specialized equipment Advanced skill in diagnosing and repairing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and air systems Proficiency in using hand tools, specialized shop equipment, welding tools, and computerized diagnostic systems Ability to inspect equipment and accurately identify worn, defective, or improperly adjusted components Strong problem-solving skills and ability to perform complex repairs independently Ability to read, understand, and follow technical manuals, schematics, and written or oral instructions Effective communication and customer service skills to support positive working relationships Knowledge of occupational hazards and the ability to consistently apply safety practices and procedures Education & Experience High school diploma or GED equivalent Training in automotive or equipment repair Journeyman-level experience in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and heavy equipment Experience working with specialized and heavy-duty equipment is preferred Equivalent combinations of education, training, and experience that provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered Licenses and Certifications Valid Illinois Commercial Driver's License (CDL Class B) with air brakes endorsement upon hire State of Illinois DOT Truck Certified Safety Tester, or ability to obtain within one (1) year of hire Physical Demands and Work Environment The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. The employee is frequently exposed to dust, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock; and occasionally exposed to wet, humid, cold, and varied weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
