Job Description
The Gearbox Repair Technician/Mechanic is essential to the inspection, diagnosis, repair, and testing of industrial gearboxes, speed reducers, and power transmission equipment that support critical, heavy industry applications.
Key Responsibilities:
Inspection & Disassembly Disassemble and inspect helical, bevel, worm, planetary, and other industrial gearbox types Identify mechanical, lubrication, and structural issues through thorough troubleshooting Inspect gears, shafts, bearings, housings, seals, keys, and fasteners for wear, pitting, spalling, cracking, or other damage Evaluate gear tooth contact patterns, backlash, and bearing clearances against OEM specifications Assess housing integrity for cracks, porosity, or structural damage that may affect performance or reliability Repair & Rebuild Clean, repair, or replace components such as gears, shafts, bearings, seals, gaskets, keys, and related mechanical parts Perform shaft repair or replacement, including keyway machining and sleeve installation as required Set and verify bearing preload, gear mesh, and backlash to OEM tolerances Conduct housing repairs including line boring, bushing installation, and surface restoration as needed Reassemble gearboxes according to OEM specifications, ensuring proper clearances, torque values, and component alignment Perform operational and load testing of rebuilt gearboxes to verify performance and integrity prior to return to service Align gearbox input and output shafts using laser or dial indicator alignment methods Documentation & Quality Maintain accurate records of repairs, parts used, and labor time Ensure all work meets company quality standards and safety regulations Maintain a clean and safe work environment in accordance with company policies Compensation & Benefits Competitive pay starting at $25/hr (based on experience) 401(k) with company matching Health benefits including Vision and Dental Life Insurance Paid Time Off Skills & Competencies Strong written and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently and as part of a team Analytical and problem-solving capabilities Strong mechanical aptitude with working knowledge of gear theory, power transmission systems, and lubrication principles Proficiency with gearbox-specific hand and power tools, including torque wrenches, bearing pullers, and press equipment Ability to read and interpret OEM service manuals, assembly drawings, cross-sectional blueprints, and gear geometry specifications Proficiency with precision measuring instruments including micrometers, dial indicators, feeler gauges, and calipers Familiarity with gear types (helical, bevel, worm, planetary, spur) and their respective failure modes Understanding of lubrication systems, oil viscosity requirements, and contamination analysis High attention to detail and accuracy Ability to operate a forklift and overhead crane (or willingness to be trained) Commitment to company policies, procedures, and safety standards Education & Experience High school diploma or GED required Technical or vocational training in mechanical technology, power transmission, or related field preferred Minimum of two (2) years of hands-on experience with industrial gearbox repair or power transmission maintenance preferred Equal Opportunity Employer We are an EOE employer and encourage applications from minorities, females, veterans, and individuals with disabilities.
