Heavy Equipment Mechanic - Shop & Field Service 7964 Clyde Park Avenue SW, Byron Center, MI 49315 Full-time Full-time Position Summary Diversco Construction Company is hiring an experienced Heavy Equipment Mechanic to perform preventive maintenance and repairs on our construction fleet, both in our Byron Center shop and at active job sites across greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan. This is a full-time, hourly position based out of our Byron Center yard, with field service work performed in a fully equipped company service truck. This is a hands-on role for a skilled diesel technician who takes ownership of keeping equipment running, communicates clearly with operators and field leadership, and brings a problem-solver's mindset to mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical diagnostics. Work Location & Schedule Based out of Byron Center yard (7964 Clyde Park Ave SW, Byron Center, MI). Requires daily travel to active job sites across the Service Area Service area: greater Grand Rapids and West Michigan (typically within 60-75 miles)
Schedule:
8-hour days, Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or Saturday work as job demands require Overnight travel is not anticipated
Responsibilities Shop Maintenance & Repair:
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on excavators, loaders, dozers, compactors, sweepers, water trucks, air compressors, and support equipment Diagnose and repair diesel engines, hydraulic systems, hydrostatic and powershift transmissions, electrical systems, undercarriages, and attachments Perform welding and fabrication repairs as needed Maintain accurate service records, parts usage, and equipment hour logs Order parts and coordinate with vendors for specialty repairs, warranty work, and outside services Keep the shop clean, organized, and safe
Field Service:
Respond to equipment service needs at active job sites in a fully equipped company service truck based at the shop Diagnose and repair equipment in the field when feasible; coordinate transport to the shop when not Communicate clearly with operators, foremen, and project managers about repair status, downtime estimates, and equipment readiness Support operators with basic equipment troubleshooting and walk-around guidance
Compliance & Team Support:
Follow all OSHA and Diversco safety protocols, including lockout/tagout, hot work, and confined space procedures where applicable Operate equipment as needed for movement, testing, and load-out Communicate professionally with project foremen, operators, customers, and the public Support the broader operations team during weather days, slow periods, or as otherwise assigned
Required Qualifications:
5+ years of hands-on heavy equipment mechanic experience (construction, mining, agricultural, or heavy rental industry) Strong diagnostic skills across diesel engines, hydraulics, electrical, and drivetrains Welding and fabrication competency (MIG, stick; oxy-acetylene cutting) Ability to read and interpret service manuals, hydraulic schematics, and electrical diagrams Comfortable working independently in the field and as part of a shop team Valid driver's license with a clean driving record Own standard hand tools and rolling toolbox (specialty and large tools provided by Diversco) Clear communication with operators and field supervision Ability to pass a pre-employment drug screen
Preferred Qualifications:
CDL Class A or B (or willingness to obtain) OEM diagnostic software experience (Caterpillar ET, Volvo Tech Tool, Komatsu, Hitachi) Experience with GPS / machine control systems (Trimble, Topcon) Manufacturer-specific certifications (Caterpillar, Cummins, Deutz, Volvo) EPA Section 609 (mobile A/C) certification Experience with off-road water trucks, pavement sweepers, or compaction equipment Prior field service experience with a contractor or rental fleet Mechanical aptitude across mixed-make fleets (Caterpillar, Volvo, Komatsu, Hitachi, and others)
Key Equipment You'll Maintain:
Excavators ranging from compact (Caterpillar 308) to large (Hitachi ZX350, Volvo ECR235) Wheel loaders (Komatsu WA380), compact track loaders (Caterpillar 289C2), and dozers (Caterpillar D4C) Off-road water trucks (Volvo A25C with 6,000-gallon tank) Pneumatic and drum compactors (Sakai TS200, Hamm 2410/2422) Pavement sweepers (Broce, Rosco) Towable air compressors (Sullivan Palatek) Job-site support equipment including GenSets, hydro mulchers, trench boxes, GPS / total station systems, and manhole saws
