Job Title:
Shop Helper Job Description The Shop Helper supports the repair, maintenance, and testing of mechanical equipment in a busy workshop and yard environment. You assist technicians by applying basic mechanical concepts, reviewing schematics and manuals, and operating or helping to operate workshop equipment to troubleshoot issues and verify the quality of repairs. In this role, you set a positive example through punctuality, professional communication, attention to cleanliness and organization, and a strong commitment to safety. Responsibilities Assist in testing mechanical products and equipment after repair or modification to verify proper performance and compliance with manufacturer specifications. Support technicians in repairing and replacing damaged or worn parts on a variety of machines and heavy equipment. Help operate and inspect machines or heavy equipment to diagnose defects and identify required repairs. Assist in dismantling and reassembling heavy equipment using hoists, hand tools, and other shop equipment under supervision. Perform or assist with cleaning, lubricating, and other routine maintenance tasks on equipment and vehicles. Examine parts for damage or excessive wear using measuring tools such as micrometers and gauges under guidance. Read, understand, and help interpret operating manuals, parts manuals, blueprints, and technical drawings to support repair and maintenance work. Assist with overhauling and testing machines or equipment to ensure proper operating efficiency. Help inspect, test, and listen to defective equipment to diagnose malfunctions using test instruments such as handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges. Support yard operations, including loading and unloading equipment and materials as needed. Operate shop equipment such as cranes, forklifts, and man-lifts after receiving proper training, licensing, and/or certification. Assist with adjusting and relining brakes, aligning wheels, tightening bolts and screws, and reassembling equipment components. Help repair and maintain engine components, including fuel injection systems, under the direction of experienced technicians. Assist in reviewing layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders in preparation for welding or cutting metal components. Promote a safe work environment by consistently following established safety procedures and encouraging others to do the same. Follow instructions for the proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials such as oil, antifreeze, transmission fluid, auto parts cleaner, and similar substances. Maintain the shop and yard in a clean, organized condition, including cleaning and degreasing tools, parts, and work areas. Assist shop technicians with the assembly and testing of mechanical equipment using appropriate tools and methods. Use power tools safely and correctly as part of repair, maintenance, and cleaning tasks. Support basic inventory-related activities by helping track, move, and organize parts and materials in the shop and yard. Essential Skills High school diploma or GED. At least 1 year of related experience in a mechanical, shop, or general labor environment. Mechanical aptitude with the ability to learn repair, assembly, and testing procedures for mechanical equipment. Experience working with cranes and forklifts. Ability to read and follow directions from operating manuals, parts manuals, and basic technical documents. Comfort using power tools and basic hand tools in a workshop setting. Ability to assist with cleaning, degreasing, and lubricating tools, parts, and equipment. Capability to maintain a clean, organized shop and yard environment. Willingness to follow established safety procedures and guidelines for handling and disposing of hazardous materials. Ability to communicate respectfully and professionally with all levels of staff. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience assisting with the inspection of parts using micrometers, gauges, or other measuring tools. Exposure to operating or assisting with the operation of heavy equipment in a yard or workshop setting. Familiarity with using handheld computers, motor analyzers, chassis charts, and pressure gauges to support troubleshooting. Experience supporting basic inventory activities in a shop environment. Willingness to obtain and maintain any required training, licenses, or certifications to operate cranes, forklifts, and man-lifts. Ability to interpret simple blueprints, layouts, diagrams, or work orders in preparation for welding or cutting operations. Strong work ethic, reliability, and attention to detail in completing assigned tasks. Why Work Here? Work Environment You work in both indoor and outdoor areas within a facility that stores, receives, repairs, and tests equipment. The environment includes a workshop and yard where heavy equipment is moved, inspected, and serviced. You may work around cranes, forklifts, man-lifts, and various power tools and test instruments, following established safety procedures at all times. The role involves hands-on tasks such as cleaning, degreasing, lubricating, loading and unloading equipment, and maintaining a clean and organized workspace in varying weather conditions. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Frenchtown, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
