Work may require maintenance and repair of heavy equipment used in construction of highways/bridges and inspecting work performed by contracted vendors. Work may require contact with other governmental agencies and private contractors. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments, however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.

Essential Duties:

Equipment Mechanic I Analyzes and interprets computerized diagnostic equipment information. Adjusts brakes and replaces brake system parts to include air brake and anti-locking systems. Handles and disposes of environmentally hazardous materials in accordance with federal and state laws. Checks lighting and wiring mechanisms to ensure proper functioning of headlights, spotlights, tail lights and parking lights. Maintains and repairs heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges Orders, picks up and delivers parts, materials, tools, and operates equipment and vehicles to include heavy equipment. Performs preventive maintenance, inspections and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment; as required moves items related to these activities. Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. May travel and perform work in other shops throughout the state as required Troubleshoots, tests and repairs electrical systems, electronic ignitions and fuel injection systems. Uses computerized diagnostic analyzer systems and performs complex diagnostic work on vehicles/equipment. Prepares vehicles for use by checking for required safety features such as first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and mobile radios. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Equipment Mechanic II :

Includes all essential duties listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as: Performs quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment. Performs acetylene and electric arc welding repairs. Completes repair order paperwork and accurately enters data into fleet information management system. Performs emergency spot repairs.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:

Equipment Mechanic I:

2 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair.

Equipment Mechanic II:

4 years in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair. (Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications Associate's degree in Automotive and/or Diesel Technology may substitute for 2 year's experience. Certificates of course completion from a Technical Training Institute in Automotive and Diesel Technology may substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Licenses and Certifications :

Valid driver's license. This position requires driving a state vehicle. Must have a Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or have obtained a Class "A" CDL, within 180 calendar days from date of employment.

Mechanical equipment operation and maintenance Vehicle air conditioning and heating systems Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures Troubleshooting, repairing and calibrating electronic and mechanical components and subsystems Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment, and mechanical devices of the trade Mechanical repair procedures for diesel, gasoline, CNG and LPG engines Using applicable electronic test equipment Diagnosing problems and repairing equipment to include electronic and mechanical components and subsystems according to defined codes and specifications Reading and interpreting equipment repair and parts contracts Follow applicable safety standards, practices and procedures

Equipment Mechanic II:

Includes all competencies listed for Equipment Mechanic I as well as: State procurement guidelines for parts purchases and P-card use Brake repairs to include anti-locking systems, mechanical brakes, air brakes and hydraulic brake systems Coordinating labor, materials, and equipment

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals Subject to atmospheric conditions-fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation Subject to air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s) Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction Pushing-using upper extremities to press against object with force to move in a direction Grasping-applying pressure to an object with fingers and palm
