Job Description
Position OverviewWe are seeking a skilled Commercial HVAC Service Technician to maintain, diagnose, and repair heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems in commercial facilities. The ideal candidate will ensure reliable system performance, maximize energy efficiency, and provide responsive service to minimize downtime. This role requires strong troubleshooting skills, experience with commercial equipment including heat pumps, VAV systems, terminal units, fan coils and direct expansion (DX) systems, and a commitment to safety and customer service.
Key ResponsibilitiesPerform routine service, preventive maintenance, and emergency repairs on commercial HVAC equipment including rooftop units, packaged systems, heat pumps, VAV boxes, terminal units, fan coils and DX systems.
Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and controls-related problems using hand tools, meters, gauges, and electronic diagnostic equipment.
Recover, handle and charge refrigerant in accordance with EPA (or local) regulations and company policies; perform leak detection and repair.
Troubleshoot and calibrate HVAC controls and building automation interfaces; adjust VAV and terminal unit operation for optimal comfort and efficiency.
Replace motors, compressors, contactors, valves, sensors, thermostats, and other components as required to restore operation.
Document all service calls, diagnostic findings, repairs performed and parts used in the company work order system; communicate status to dispatch and facility contacts.
Perform system start-ups, shutdowns and seasonal inspections to identify potential issues and recommend upgrades or repairs to management and customers.
Respond to on-call and emergency service requests in a timely manner, often outside normal business hours or during adverse conditions.
Maintain stock of commonly used parts and tools, and coordinate with parts department to order specialty items.
Follow safety policies and procedures including lockout/tagout, confined space precautions and appropriate PPE; maintain a clean and organized work area.
Provide excellent customer service by explaining work performed and preventive recommendations clearly and professionally.
QualificationsHVAC certificate or technical diploma from an accredited trade school, or equivalent combination of education and experience.3+ years of hands-on commercial HVAC service experience (experience with heat pumps, VAV, terminal units, fan coil and DX systems strongly preferred).EPA 608 Universal Refrigerant Certification (or locally required refrigerant handling certification) required.
Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills with ability to read wiring diagrams, schematics and control sequences.
Experience servicing and repairing commercial equipment: compressors, refrigerant circuits, motors, bearings, controls and expansion devices.
Familiarity with building automation systems and control strategies for VAV and terminal units.
Proficient with multimeters, gauges, refrigerant recovery machines and other HVAC diagnostic tools.
Valid drivers license, reliable transportation, and willingness to travel between job sites.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work in confined spaces and varying environmental conditions.
Excellent communication and customer service skills; able to work independently and as part of a service team.
Willingness to participate in on-call rotation and respond to emergency calls as needed.
Preferred:
manufacturer certifications, OSHA 10/30, and prior experience with energy efficiency and commissioning projects.
