This position assists in the installation, service, and repair of environmental control systems in school buildings, offices, structures, and facilities, utilizing knowledge of refrigeration theory, pipefitting, and structural layout. Requires inspecting, servicing, repairing, and installing all types of heating, air conditioning, and refrigeration equipment.DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This job has no supervisory responsibilities.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
- Assists in planning, assigning, and supervising the installation, servicing, and repairing of HVAC systems.
- Inspects work in progress and upon completion for conformance with prescribed standards and safety regulations.
- Assists mechanics in diagnosing and repairing equipment for operating efficiency and safety factors.
- Prepares time and materials estimates for maintenance and repair projects.
- Reviews incoming and completed work orders and maintains related records.
- Manages stock and prepares requisitions for parts and supplies.
- Ensures compliance with codes regarding HVAC equipment.
- Completes and fills work orders for required equipment and materials.
- Performs preventative maintenance of chiller units and other HVAC equipment.
- Plans and schedules the work of subordinate staff providing technical advice and help.
- Assists in coordinating the work of indoor air quality team members in response to air quality inquiries.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
High School Diploma or State Approved High School Equivalency. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship in the trade and experience in the maintenance and repair of heating and air conditioning equipment. In-depth experience in both air conditioning and heating systems with evidence of increasing work responsibilities. Or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and/or training that provides the required knowledge and abilities.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of approved methods and practices in installing, maintaining, and repairing heating and air conditioning equipment including controls and other related fixtures, with thorough knowledge in one area (air conditioning or heating).
- Knowledge of the laws, regulations, and safety procedures pertaining to heating and air conditioning equipment.
- Knowledge of electrical circuits and schematics, plumbing, and equipment controls.
- Effective communication and human relations skills are required.
- Ability to provide technical guidance and support to the indoor air quality team particularly on complex heating/cooling problems and systems.
- Ability to plan, assign, supervise, and inspect the work of mechanics, technicians and other workers.
- Ability to prepare time and materials estimates working from diagrams and sketches.
- Ability to diagnose, repair, and maintain heating systems and central air conditioning/refrigeration systems.
- Ability to properly use and maintain HVAC tools.
