Job Title:
HVAC Service Technician Job Description This role focuses on performing HVAC and light refrigeration service calls for commercial customers. You will travel to multiple sites each day, communicate directly with customers, diagnose issues with HVAC and refrigeration systems, and complete corrective repairs to restore safe and efficient operation. Responsibilities Perform 3-6 HVAC and refrigeration service calls per day at commercial locations such as restaurants, convenience stores, markets, and other commercial buildings. Communicate clearly and professionally with customers to understand reported issues and explain recommended repairs and solutions. Diagnose problems with HVAC systems, including rooftop units (RTUs) up to 25 tons, air handlers, make-up air units, exhaust systems, and compressors. Troubleshoot HVAC and refrigeration systems using mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant knowledge to identify root causes of failures. Perform corrective repairs on HVAC and refrigeration systems, ensuring work meets safety, quality, and performance standards. Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and technical documentation to support accurate diagnosis and repair. Conduct electrical testing on HVAC and refrigeration systems to verify proper operation and identify electrical faults. Use computer or mobile devices to receive electronic dispatches, document services performed, and upload photos of repairs. Drive to and from job sites safely, following all traffic regulations and company driving policies. Maintain and use personal tools and equipment properly, ensuring they are in good working condition. Provide basic guidance and education to customers on system operation, maintenance needs, and preventive measures. Complete service documentation accurately and in a timely manner for each call, including parts used and work performed. Essential Skills Minimum 5 years of HVAC service experience, including troubleshooting and performing corrective repairs. Experience communicating directly with customers and talking through repair recommendations and completed work. Hands-on experience with commercial HVAC systems, including rooftop units (RTUs) up to 25 tons, air handlers, make-up air units, exhaust systems, and compressors. Ability to troubleshoot HVAC systems using mechanical, electrical, and refrigerant knowledge. Refrigeration experience with fractional horsepower systems and willingness to expand refrigeration skills. Proficiency in reading and interpreting blueprints and mechanical/electrical diagrams. Ability to perform electrical testing on HVAC and refrigeration systems safely and accurately. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record. Computer or smartphone literacy for electronic dispatching, uploading photos, and documenting services performed. Ownership of essential HVAC service tools and the ability to maintain them in good working order. Strong customer service skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and professionally on-site. Ability to work independently in the field and manage multiple service calls in a day. Additional Skills & Qualifications Five years of commercial HVAC experience preferred; candidates with slightly less commercial experience may still be considered. Experience working in commercial environments such as restaurants, convenience stores, and markets. Familiarity with refrigeration systems and components beyond fractional horsepower is a plus. Comfort working with both mechanical and electrical aspects of HVAC and refrigeration systems. Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail when diagnosing and repairing systems. Ability to adapt to a busy service schedule and handle varying types of equipment and customer needs. Why Work Here? The position requires regular use of mechanical and electrical tools, as well as a computer or smartphone for electronic dispatching and documentation. You will drive a vehicle to and from job sites and may take a company vehicle home when on call, depending on company policy. The work environment is fast-paced and busy, with a strong emphasis on safety, professionalism, and quality service. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Mount Clemens, MI. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $30.00 - $45.00/hr.
