Job Description

Under the direction of the HVAC Supervisor, the HVAC Technician is responsible for the installation, inspection, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of commercial and industrial HVAC systems and related equipment. This position works with a variety of equipment, including air handlers, fan coil units, VAV boxes, recirculation pumps, package units, gas-fired boilers, ice machines, chillers, compressors, and central plant systems. The incumbent applies knowledge of HVAC, electrical, and plumbing systems to diagnose and resolve equipment issues while ensuring the reliable operation of campus facilities. The position requires proficiency in the use of Microsoft Office applications, email, and computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS) to document work activities and support maintenance operations. The HVAC Technician collaborates with other trades, monitors contracted work, provides guidance and training to subordinate employees, and delivers exceptional customer service to faculty, staff, students, and visitors. As a representative of Facilities Management and the University, the incumbent is expected to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, ethics, teamwork, and appearance. This position is designated as essential personnel and may be required to work during emergency situations or University closures. HVAC Maintenance and Repairs Perform troubleshooting, diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and repairs on commercial and industrial HVAC systems, central plant equipment, and related mechanical, electrical, and plumbing components. Work Order Management and Documentation Review, prioritize, and complete assigned work orders; document maintenance activities, labor, materials, and equipment information using the CMMS and other required systems. Preventive Maintenance and Equipment Reliability Implement and support preventive maintenance programs to maximize equipment performance, reliability, efficiency, and service life. Customer Service, Collaboration, and Training Collaborate with other trades, contractors, faculty, staff, and students to resolve maintenance issues; provide excellent customer service and assist with training and mentoring team members as assigned. Safety, Compliance, and Emergency Response Maintain compliance with safety regulations, complete required training, monitor contractor work as assigned, and participate in emergency response activities and essential operations during university closures or emergencies.
Minimum Qualifications:
A high school diploma or equivalent. Associate degree in HVAC or a related field or completion of a formal technical training program with certification n HVAC. A minimum of three (3) years of progressively responsible experience in heating, ventilation, air conditioning, or a closely related field.
Desired Qualifications:
Commercial HVAC experience particularly in central plan operations. Working knowledge of gas-fired boilers, chillers, cooling towers, and related mechanical systems is preferred. Experience using a computerized maintenance management system for maintenance planning, work order management an asset tracking is preferred.
Key Competencies:
Knowledge of HVAC systems, equipment, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair procedures. Working knowledge of electrical and plumbing systems as they relate to HVAC diagnostics and repairs. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and email systems. Ability to diagnose problems, evaluate solutions, and perform repairs effectively. Strong customer service skills with the ability to interact professionally with faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders. Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team to support departmental and university goals. Demonstrated commitment to high ethical standards, professionalism, and accountability.
Physical Requirements:
Tasks require the regular and, at times, sustained performance of moderately physically demanding work. Some combination of climbing and balancing, to include climbing ladders, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights and working in confined spaces. May involve the lifting of moderately heavy objects, up to 45 pounds. Requires a full range of physical motion to operate manual/electrically powered tools.
