Employees may perform the full range of work and may provide guidance to other HVAC mechanics and/or coordinate or oversee HVAC projects. Work involves coordinating the installation, repairs, and overhaul of HVAC equipment and systems based on work orders and preventative maintenance activities.
Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. May be required to work in excess of 40 hours per work week.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Performs maintenance on HVAC equipment and systems.Observes and performs periodic inspections to ensure efficiency of HVAC systems.
Checks performance of thermostats, automatic controls, and pressure gauges.
Cleans, services, oils, and adjusts equipment; tightens fittings; aligns and repacks pumps;replaces belts; and changes and cleans filters.
Replaces defective compressors, cleans and recharges systems, and repairs motors and thermostats.
Coordinates parts and material requirements with supply room or warehouse.
Overhaul and service HVAC equipment.
Overhaul and service air compressors and pumps associated with HVAC equipment and systems.
Repair and replace worn or broken parts on condensers, compressors, and water and vacuum pumps.
Repair or adjust valves, piping connections, fittings, and couplings.
Test equipment for refrigerant leak, charging, and metering device issues.
Remove and install motors, thermostats, and humidistats.
Adjust expansion valves and add gas to refrigeration units.
Check gauges and perform preventive maintenance work.
Maintain records and prepare reports on repairs and service to equipment.
Maintain, test, and repair backup generators and power supply systems.
Monitor energy consumption of HVAC systems and makes recommendations for increased energy efficiency in operations. Setup and install complex HVAC electrical components.
Provides on-the-job training to ensure proper procedures and policies are followed.
Assists in planning, scheduling, and supervising all assigned maintenance work to ensure completion according to TJJD policy.
May act in the capacity of the Maintenance Manager in his/her absence.
Performs a variety of related duties not listed, to be determined and assigned as needed.
Performs all duties in compliance with agency safety policies and procedures:
Reports safety hazards and corrects hazards when possible. Completes required documentation in the event of an accident/injury within requested time frames.
Attends work on a regular and predictable schedule in accordance with agency attendance and leave policies.
Will be required to travel up to 50% of the time.
Actively embody and support the Texas Model by demonstrating its core values in daily tasks and interactions with others.
Qualifications:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Graduation from a standard senior high school or equivalent. Four (4) years of wage earning experience in HVAC work.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- One hundred (100) hours of approved and documented maintenance continuing education credits/hours in seminars, workshops, classrooms, or documented study.
- Vocational certification or special training in the HVAC trade.
- Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) universal certification for proper refrigerant handling techniques.
Experience and Education Substitutions:
One year of appropriate experience may substitute for one year of college (30 course hours) on a year for year basis.Completed course hours of undergraduate study may substitute for up to four years of experience on a basis of 30 course hours for one year of experience.
Completed course hours of graduate study may substitute for up to two years of experience on a basis of 12 graduate course hours for one year of experience.
Experience requirements may be satisfied by the prorated part-time equivalent.

Any degree, diploma, high school equivalent, or course hours required to meet minimum qualifications must be from an accredited educational institution.This position is subject to mandatory pre-employment drug testing and any offer of employment is contingent upon acceptable results from a drug screen conducted for the agency.

- Knowledge of general principles and theories of pressure, vacuum, vaporization, and heat conduction.

- Skill in in the use of tools required to maintain and repair of HVAC equipment.
