Job Title:
HVAC Mechanic Job Description This role focuses on maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing a wide range of commercial HVAC and building systems within a large facility environment. You will perform both preventive and corrective maintenance on critical equipment to ensure reliable, efficient, and safe operation of building mechanical and HVAC infrastructure. Responsibilities Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on boilers, chillers, hot water heating systems, domestic water plumbing systems, air handlers, VAV components, and other HVAC equipment. Inspect, diagnose, and troubleshoot complex mechanical, electrical, and plumbing issues related to building systems and HVAC components. Operate, monitor, and adjust HVAC systems and Building Automation Systems to maintain proper environmental conditions and system efficiency. Service and repair chillers, boilers, pumps, heat exchangers, and other mechanical equipment fundamental to building operations. Conduct routine inspections of building mechanical spaces and equipment to identify potential issues and address them proactively. Read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and equipment specifications to perform accurate maintenance and repairs. Document all maintenance and repair activities, including parts used, work performed, and system conditions, in accordance with facility procedures. Collaborate with other maintenance and facilities personnel to coordinate repairs, minimize equipment downtime, and support overall building operations. Ensure all work complies with safety standards, building codes, and established facility policies. Support continuous improvement of HVAC system performance by recommending upgrades, adjustments, or process improvements based on observed conditions. Essential Skills Minimum of five (5) years of recent commercial HVAC experience. Proven ability to perform preventive and corrective maintenance on boilers, chillers, hot water heating systems, domestic water plumbing systems, air handlers, VAV components, and related HVAC equipment. Hands-on expertise with chillers, boilers, pumps, and heat exchangers in a commercial facility environment. Strong working knowledge of HVAC systems and Building Automation Systems, including operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting. General maintenance knowledge of complex mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems, including the ability to operate and repair these systems. Previous experience working in commercial facilities or large building environments. High School Diploma or equivalent. CFC certification (or equivalent refrigerant handling certification) is required. Ability to troubleshoot mechanical and building automation systems effectively and efficiently. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow technical procedures and safety guidelines. Additional Skills & Qualifications Technical training in HVAC is highly desired and considered a strong asset. Willingness to obtain NATE Certification within six (6) months of employment, with certification costs covered by the company. Experience working with a variety of building automation platforms and control systems. Ability to read and interpret technical documentation, including schematics, diagrams, and equipment manuals. Strong communication skills to coordinate with facilities staff and report system status or issues. Demonstrated ability to work independently and manage multiple maintenance tasks in a commercial setting. Why Work Here? Work Environment This position is fully onsite at a federal building located in downtown Norfolk, VA. You will work a steady daytime schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, supporting the operation of a large commercial facility. The environment involves working in mechanical rooms, plant areas, and throughout the building where boilers, chillers, pumps, and other HVAC and plumbing systems are installed. You will regularly use tools and diagnostic equipment associated with HVAC and building automation systems, and you will follow facility safety procedures and guidelines appropriate for a federal building setting. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Norfolk, VA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $66560.00 - $72841.60/yr.
Health & Welfare Pay:
$1,254.20 per month (per CBA) and it also offers Vacation, Sick Leave, Paid Holidays and Pension Plan per the collective bargaining agreement.
