Job Description
Under the direction of the Facilities Services Manager, the Master Mechanic performs a variety of maintenance and engineering duties for the Facilities Services Department. In addition, the Master Mechanic may head-up a group of workers on a project, teach trade skills to members of the department, approve or disapprove work of outside vendors, help write specifications for bid work, and participate in performance improvement and customer satisfaction programs. The Master Mechanic must have a comprehensive and proven skill in a minimum of three trades, of which one of the trades will be the operation of plant equipment. Within the Master Mechanic's chosen trade, ability to design, implement, and improve systems in accordance with codes and regulations is required.
EDUCATION
High School Diploma or equivalent required. Minimum of four (4) years of trade school required OR apprenticeship experience as listed below.
WORK EXPERIENCE
Minimum of four (4) years apprenticeship experience in trade required or education as listed above. Minimum of twelve (12) years experience, including five (5) years as a Senior-Level Mechanic) in a similar sized health care institution in the engineering discipline required.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES OF JOB
15% Constructs, finishes, installs, maintains and repairs equipment, systems and facilities related to any craft or combination of same, using power and hand tools and other necessary equipment. (E) 15% Performs a variety of other semi-skilled and skilled work in various crafts such as carpentry, plumbing, welding, painting, electrical work, sheet metal work, masonry, machinist work, etc. (E) 10% Cleans, lubricates, services, repairs, installs and diagnoses malfunction of HVAC equipment, sterilizers, laundry and dietary equipment, sprinkler and standpipe systems, ice makers and refrigeration equipment, electrical systems and other plant and specialty equipment. (E) 5% Assists in making decisions on all normal and minor repairs and reports major problems to Building Services Manager and/or Campus Facilities Manager. (E) 5% Reads blueprint or model to learn work layout or plans own work layout, making routine computations as needed. (E) 5% Plans installations, layout, fabricate, recommend material and alternate methods of installation. (E) 5% Heads-up a group of workers with multiple trades to bring a project to conclusion. (E) 5% Assist in procurement of parts from vendors. Reviews outside vendor projects, makes punch lists, and approves jobs for payment. Helps write specifications for bid work and tours vendors. (E) 5% Analyzes and corrects complex building system problems alone or as part of a team. (E) 5% Maintains shops, mechanical spaces, and patient care areas, etc., in a clean safe manner. (E) 5% Teaches specific trade skills to other members of the department. (E) 5% Participates in performance improvement program of the department. (E) 5% Responds to emergency problems in the facility and makes emergency repairs as needed. (E) 5% Maintains logs, performs rounds, completes P.M. work orders, tests, and inspections. Makes recommendations and writes modification for entering in computerized maintenance system. (E) 3% Operates motor vehicles. (NE) 1% Assists in removing snow from facilities grounds and maintains grounds as required. (NE) 1% Performs related and other departmental duties as required.
