Under general supervision, to perform a variety of skilled and semi-skilled maintenance and repair work on school buildings and equipment; and to do related work as required.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Positions in this class are assigned a variety of skilled and semi-skilled tasks in the building maintenance trades. Although work requires the use of journeyman's tools and the ability to do work in one or more of the crafts, the skill required in any one field is normally less than would be required of a journeyman in that field. The responsibilities below are representative of the collective duties of positions in this class, however, no one position would normally perform all of these duties. 1.Builds shelves, partitions, bookcases, hangs doors and performs or assists in other carpentry work. 2. Makes repairs to furniture and other equipment. 3. Scrapes, sand fills and prepares surfaces for painting or repainting. 4. Makes repairs and adjustments to plumbing, fixtures and District facilities, cleans plugged drains, flushes sewer lines and replaces faucets, washers, gaskets, and related equipment. 5. Makes electrical repairs such as replacing fuses, fixtures, and switches. 6. Services fans, compressors, pumps, and other equipment by replacing wires, switches, oiling, greasing, packing and cleaning as required. 7. Builds forms and mix, pours and finishes concrete for sidewalks and other repairs, which includes patching and installation of asphalt, pouring cement and installing fences. 8. Assists skilled journeymen in carpentry, mechanical, and other repair work utilizing hand and power tools and equipment. 9. Operates a truck transporting tools and equipment to and from work assignments. 10. Provides training and instructs helpers as needed. 11. Performs other related duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

Maintenance I - Job Entry Level; one (1) year of general maintenance work experience desirable. Maintenance II - Minimum of three (3) years of general maintenance work experience, including semi-skilled experience in one or more building trades, or workers who entered the maintenance classification as I's may move to the II classification upon meeting the following requirements: 1. Complete two years in a District Maintenance I class for a combined total of three (3) years of general maintenance experience. 2. Demonstrated satisfactory knowledge and skills in performance through evaluation in all building trade areas. Demonstrated responsibility for job completion. 3. Needs improvement in one (1) area (other than skills) will be waived. 4. Needs improvement in skills or in two (2) or more areas of evaluation will be placed on three (3) month timeline, assistance, and re-evaluation. 5. Unacceptable in any one (1) area will be placed on three (3) month timeline, assistance and re-evaluation. 6. Workers in categories 4 and 5 must meet requirements of 2 and/or 3 to move to Maintenance II level. 7. Knowledge of basic work methods, tools, and terminology used in building maintenance and repair work fundamentals of one or more of the carpentry, electrical, plumbing and related trades; safe work practices. 8. Ability to perform a variety of building maintenance and repair work; perform assigned job tasks without close supervision; use a variety of hand and power tools with skill and safety; perform heavy manual labor; follow oral and written directions. 9. Possession and maintenance of a valid California Driver License.
