ABOUT THE ROLE
The City of Fountain Valley Public Works Department is seeking two (2) dedicated and motivated Maintenance Worker I's in the Streets division to join our team. This position involves performing a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, rehabilitation, and reconstruction of a variety of Public Works duties and services. As a Maintenance Worker I, you will assist in the performance of general maintenance support of the Utilities or General Services Divisions including tasks performed for street and sidewalk facilities, graffiti removal, and various other street related functions depending on the area of assignment.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is an entry-level classification performed under general supervision. Temporary/part-time employment is restricted to 1,000 hours within a 12-month period (July 1 to June 30) and does not qualify to receive City benefits, except those required by law. Temporary/part-time employees are only eligible to work a maximum of 28 hours per week. Job Overview
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. Operate a variety of vehicles with or without trailers and motorized equipment. Load, lift and carry various materials, equipment, and supplies. Operate a variety of power, pneumatic and miscellaneous hand tools in the performance of Public Works maintenance and repair activities. Perform strenuous manual work as required including digging, backfilling of trenches, etc. Qualification Guidelines
EDUCATION
High school graduation or equivalent is required. College coursework with an emphasis in water technology, public works maintenance or construction is highly desirable.
EXPERIENCE
None required. Experience in the maintenance, repair, rehabilitation, and construction of streets, sidewalk, curb and gutter, traffic signs and delineation, preferably in a municipal setting, is highly desirable.
LICENSE REQUIRED
: Valid California Class "C" Driver's License to perform the essential functions of the position. A commercial driver's license is highly desirable. Employment Status:

Social Security:
City employees are not covered by Social Security; therefore, they are not required to contribute 6.2% of salary. Public Agency Retirement Services (PARS)
Plan :
The City has adopted a qualified social security alternative plan for all part-time, seasonal, as needed employees not covered by CalPERS to comply with Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act 1990 (OBRA 90). Employees will contribute 7.5% of their wages into the defined retirement plan on a pre-tax basis in lieu of Social Security. Most Recruits and Trainees will be enrolled in the Public Agency Retirement Services plan (PARS), unless previous CalPERS membership is established and funds are on deposit.
Sick Leave:
Pursuant to the Health Workplaces, Healthy Families Act, part-time employees accrue sick leave at the rate of one (1) hour for every 30 hours worked for a maximum of 40 hours per fiscal year. Part-time employees may begin using accrued sick leave on the 90 th day of employment or later and may carry into the next fiscal year, up to 80 hours of accrued sick leave.
Medicare:
Employees contribute 1.45% to Medicare.
