THE POSITION
The City of San Fernando is seeking an experienced and responsible professional to become a full-time Public Works Maintenance Worker in our Public Works Department. Under general supervision, to perform a variety of skilled construction, maintenance, and repair activities at various assigned city locations including, but not limited to the following areas: Facilities, Streets, Mechanical, Parks, Sewer and Water.
IMPORTANT & ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Perform skilled maintenance, construction, and repair work on streets, water systems, and sewer systems. Patch and stripe streets; install concrete for curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and alleyways. Clean and maintain streets, alleys, ditches, bus shelters, and storm drains. Install, maintain, and replace street name and traffic signs. Remove graffiti from public and private property. Perform asphalt resurfacing and slurry seal work on streets. Assist in the maintenance, cleaning, and servicing of vehicles, tolls, and equipment. Assist with sewer line construction, maintenance, repairs, and water system installations, including meters, hydrants, valves, and service lines. Operate tree trimming/lift truck, mowers, and other equipment/tools for purposes of cutting grass and trimming trees and shrubs. Operate vehicles, trucks, tractors, and other heavy equipment. Perform landscaping and grounds maintenance duties, including planting and transplanting flowers, shrubs, and trees, and maintaining public amenities such as bus shelters. Communicate with residents and customers regarding maintenance concerns, service requests, and complaints, referring issues as appropriate. Support special projects and events, maintain logs and records, and supervise staff as assigned.
JOB-RELATED & ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Ability To:
Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Understand and speak Spanish highly desirable. Basic construction methods, materials and terminology. Basic safety precautions and practices. Maintenance of shrubs, trees, flowers, streets, sewers, storm drains, buildings, and water systems.
Knowledge Of:

EXPERIENCE & TRAINING GUIDELINES A
typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities would be the following:
Experience:
One year experience in general construction or maintenance is required.
Training:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent is required. Two years of experience can be substituted for two years of education.
Special Requirements:
Must stay current in field and acquire all necessary training that new technological changes and new laws may present. Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license. Valid California Class B driver's licenses is highly desirable. May be required to work overtime, weekends, and holidays. Operational demands may necessitate a permanent work schedule that includes working weekends with days off during the week.
Physical Demands:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, squat, stoop, reach, twist, climb and lift about 90 lbs.; may be exposed to sun, and work under high and low temperatures (mostly between 40 and 90 degrees); may be exposed to toxic/poisonous substances, slippery surfaces and frequent loud noises.

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS
Annual Salary:
$52,320 - $64,836 RETIREMENT California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS), 2%@55 formulas for classic members and 2%@62 for Classic members PEPRA members. All are integrated with Social Security.
INSURANCE
Cafeteria Plan with monthly flex dollar allowance to apply towards offered medical, dental, and vision plans for employee and eligible dependents. City pays for $50,000 term life/AD&D insurance policy. Additional voluntary purchase available, with no medical questions asked.
VACATION
Ranges from 10 days (80 hours) to 20 days (160 hours) depending on years of service.
SICK LEAVE 12
days per year. Partial payment of unused accumulated sick leave (over 800 hours).
HOLIDAYS 13
days per year.
BILINGUAL PAY
$100 per month upon passing bilingual (Spanish language) exam.
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT
Voluntary program available to help with out-of-pocket healthcare and dependent care expenses.
LONGEVITY PAY SFPEA
members receive an additional 3% after 10 YOS; a total of 4% after 20 YOS; and a total of 5% after 30 YOS.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT
Up to $3,000 per fiscal year for approved courses.
EDUCATION INCENTIVE 2
% Above base salary for a bachelor's degree and additional 2% for master's degree in related field from an accredited institution.
