Job Description

Effective July 1, 2026, the hourly salary range for this position will increase to $34.38-$46.29 per hour. Are you ready to take the next step in your career? The City of Tustin is seeking an experienced, motivated, and hands-on Maintenance Leadworker to join our Public Works team in Facility Maintenance. This is an opportunity to lead by example, support a dedicated crew, and make a visible impact on the community every day. As a Maintenance Leadworker, you'll work in the field leading—and working alongside—a skilled Facility Maintenance team dedicated to maintaining the City's facilities and public buildings. Whether coordinating repairs, overseeing preventive maintenance projects, or helping resolve complex facility issues, you'll play a vital role in ensuring the spaces where employees serve the public and residents access essential services remain safe, reliable, and operating at their best.
THE PUBLIC WORKS DEPARTMENT
The Tustin Public Works Department is responsible for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of all public infrastructure and public right-of-way. THE RECRUITMENT PROCESS
Application materials will be carefully reviewed to identify candidates who meet the minimum qualifications for the position. Those who are best qualified will be invited to participate in a panel interview. Those who pass the panel interview will earn placement on the eligible list, which is valid for one (1) year and may be used for current and future vacancies in the job classification. Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Leads and participates in the work of a crew assigned to perform maintenance and repair duties of City parks, landscaping, streets, and/or buildings
  • Schedules, prioritizes, and coordinates crew work assignments to ensure proper coverage; receives and acts upon work orders, service requests, complaints, and concerns from other divisions, departments, and the public
  • Reviews and evaluates the work of assigned employees for accuracy, proper work methods, techniques, and compliance with applicable standards and specifications; ensures adherence to safe work practices and procedures
  • Trains assigned employees in work methods, procedures, and techniques; provides guidance and technical assistance to staff
  • Monitors employee performance; assists Maintenance Supervisor with the preparation of performance evaluations
  • Oversees the use, care, and operation of assigned equipment; ensures equipment and vehicles are maintained in proper working order
  • Prepares budgetary estimates of staff, equipment and materials required
  • Monitors inventory of equipment, materials, and supplies; solicits price quotes and makes requests for needed purchases
  • Coordinates, monitors, and inspects the work of contract staff; ensures work is performed in accordance with plans, specifications, contracts, and City standards
  • Compiles data on crew activities and materials and supplies used; updates and maintains records; prepares activity and summary reports
  • Responds to emergency calls for maintenance and repair activities A combination of education, experience, and training that has provided the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities is required for entry into the classification.
A typical combination includes:
Education and/or
Experience:
Graduation from high school supplemented by college-level courses in public works maintenance related to facility maintenance; and three (3) years of journey level experience in public works maintenance. Licenses and/or
Certificates:
Possession of a valid California Class B commercial driver's license and an acceptable driving record. Valid certification as an Arborist, Backflow Tester, Pest Control Qualified Applicator, and/or Playground Safety Inspector may be required, depending upon position assignment.
Special Requirements:
Satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical examination, and administrative screening. May be called to respond to emergencies outside of regular work hours (e.g. evenings, holidays, and weekends). Subject to random drug/alcohol testing pursuant to Department of Transportation regulations.
