Job Description

Town of Plainfield Recreation Department Recreation & Senior Center Custodian/Maintenance Worker Compensation :
$20.00 per hour, 25 hours per week
Reports To:
Recreation Director Supervision exercised:
None Work Schedule:
25 hrs per week, 52 wks per year. Mon - Fri, 3:30pm - 8:30pm with one 15-minute paid break taken on site.
Position Summary:
Performs preventative maintenance & repairs as well as custodial duties within the Plainfield Community Center and assists with the landscaping and property maintenance of the grounds.
Custodial Essential Functions:
  • Vacuums hallways, lobbies, vestibules, offices, and rooms
  • Moping and sweeping
  • Cleans and replenishes bathrooms
  • Wipes down and sanitizes surfaces and door handles
  • Empties trash and recycling; regularly cleans receptacles inside and out
  • Dusting & cleaning of walls, vents, etc.
  • Sets up and breaks down tables and chairs in preparation for the following days' activities
  • Moving equipment and hanging/removing wall mounted items as needed
  • Assist with overseeing supply inventory for janitorial and maintenance supplies
  • Turns off all lights and secures building at end of night
  • On a monthly basis, check all fire extinguishers within the community center
  • Performs other custodial duties as assigned
Maintenance Essential Functions:
  • Assists with maintaining the Community Center grounds which includes mowing, weed whacking, weeding, hedge trimming, leaf blowing, snow and ice removal, power washing, gutter cleaning, light painting, and other outdoor tasks as assigned.
  • During the winter months, will assist the Town Maintenance Department on "winter projects" pertaining to the Parks and Recreation Department.
  • Performs other maintenance duties as assigned.
License or Certificate:
  • Requires a valid driver's license, good driving record, and provide own transportation. Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be able to work with people of various ages, gender, race, ethnicity, and socio-economic backgrounds
  • Must be 18 years or older
  • Must have a high school degree or equivalent
  • Must complete and clear a criminal background check upon hire
  • Must be self-directed & driven to take initiative
  • Ability to read and interpret instructions, procedures, manuals, and other documents
  • Ability to report maintenance requests
  • Knowledge of cleaning methods and equipment
  • Basic understanding of the upkeep and care of equipment
  • Understanding of cleaning compounds and chemicals, and their safe, efficient use
  • Understanding how to safely and effectively use common outdoor power equipment such as mowers, leaf blowers, and weed whackers Preferred Qualifications
  • At least one year of custodial experience
  • At least one year of outdoor property maintenance Working conditions and
Physical Demands:
  • Work may be performed in an outdoor environment
  • May be subjected to varying weather conditions such as hot and humid or cold and rainy
  • Must be able to able to sit, climb a ladder, crouch, or stand for long periods of time
  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out essential duties and safely lift 40lbs or more
  • Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust
