Job Description

Assists in the performance of work connected with the installation, maintenance, repair and overhaul of a variety of water pumping plant and related water systems equipment; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics :
This class differs from the Water Plant Maintenance Mechanic I in that the Water Plant Maintenance Mechanic Helper works with and assists a skilled Water Plant Maintenance Mechanic in installing, maintaining, repairing and overhauling a variety of water pumping plant and related water systems equipment; whereas the Water Plant Maintenance Mechanic I performs skilled work in installing, maintaining, repairing and overhauling a variety of water pumping and related water systems equipment. (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position.) Assists in the installation, maintenance, repair and overhaul of horizontal centrifugal pumping units, reservoir altitude valves, service altitude valve control units, chemical feed pumps, disinfection systems and differential converters; Assists in installing and overhauling deep well pump discharge regulating valves, check valves, solenoid valves, air relief valves, vacuum breakers and related equipment; Assists in the overhaul and repair of electrical motors, air blowers, electric motor driven air compressors and manual, air or hydraulically activated butterfly valves; Assists in installing, overhauling and repairing mechanical shaft seals, mechanical flow meters and gauges; Assists in the inspection and servicing of pumping plant and related water plant equipment; Repairs or renews worn centrifugal pump bearing and shaft sleeves; Operates shop machines and equipment; Studies equipment operational and maintenance manuals; Performs general ground and building maintenance work as required; Operates a motor vehicle; Assists in system residual checks and adjustments; Assists in the maintenance and repair of disinfection systems; Delivers disinfection products; Assists with the operation and maintenance of combustion engine-powered generators and pumps; Performs other related duties as required.
Training and Experience :
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and one (1) year of experience under a skilled mechanic in the repair and overhaul of equipment in a pumping plant, marine engine room, power plant or machine shop, which included repair and overhaul work on pumping apparatus or generators.
License Requirement :
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license( equivalent to State of Hawaii Type 3). Prior to completion of the probationary period, possession of a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A, B, or C) with Hazardous Material (H) endorsement and a Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate.
Knowledge of :
Tools, materials and practices used in the operation, maintenance and repair of electrically and engine operated pumps, generators and other related equipment; principles and practices of elementary electricity and hydraulics; occupational hazard and safety practices involved in working around electricity and moving machinery; use of standard office machines and equipment, including personal computers. Ability to : Operate hand tools and shop machinery; do mechanical work connected with the installation, maintenance and repair of pumping plant equipment; work harmoniously with others; understand and follow oral and written instructions; handle weights and loads; operate a personal computer using a variety of software applications.
