Job Description

Description The Public Works Maintenance Worker I position is responsible for performing a variety of activities required for the maintenance, repair, and/or construction of Village streets, grounds and facilities. In addition, this position operates complex equipment and machinery used in maintenance and development projects. The position reports to the Public Works Crew Leader. The hours for the position are 7:00 am - 3:30 pm Monday through Friday. Example of Duties
  • Cleans garage and work areas as required. Maintains public works equipment in a safe and working order. Ensures that all public works tools are returned and stored in the proper place.
  • Maintains Village property landscape by mowing grass, trimming trees, pruning trees and bushes. Picks up and hauls debris caused by storms and floods.
  • Repairs and maintains street lights by replacing fuses, photocells, bulbs, and/or ballast's. Removes damaged light poles and installs and wires new poles.
  • Assists in the repair, construction, and maintenance of Village streets and facilities including concrete and asphalt repairs, storm sewer maintenance, and sign installation.
  • Serves as the public works duty man during an assigned week. Responds to after hour calls concerning potentially hazardous situations including but not limited to broken glass in the streets, downed tree limbs, icy streets, damaged street light poles, and downed street signs. Resolves problems or calls for additional manpower as required.
  • Plows and salts streets during snow and/or ice removal.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties listed above. Typical Qualifications
  • Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to the successful completion of four years of high school.
  • Requires the possession (or ability to obtain) a valid Illinois Commercial vehicle operator's license (CDL) within 6 months of hire.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of the care and use of the tools, vehicles, and equipment used in construction, maintenance and repair activities.
  • Requires elementary knowledge of the hazards of the trade and appropriate safety measures and precautions.
  • Requires a willingness to respond to emergency situation 24 hours a day.
  • Requires ability to work under inclement weather conditions.
  • Requires ability to perform minor maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
  • Requires ability to perform manual labor.
  • Requires ability to follow safety standards and procedures.
  • Requires ability to locate and obtain parts and supplies.
  • Requires ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with coworkers and the general public.
  • Requires ability to obtain a pesticide operator's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL ABILITIES
Work is performed independently and requires physical strength and agility necessary to perform light to heavy labor. Work is performed indoors and outdoors and requires fieldwork to perform various types of inspections and repairs. When out in the field, risks physical hazards from working in and around traffic, heavy machinery, heights, confined spaces, and other underground utilities. Exposure to noise, vibration, hazardous and toxic materials, fumes, gases, and odors is routine. Work requires physical strength and agility necessary to perform manual labor under all kinds of weather conditions. Work activities include combinations of sitting, standing, and walking and the ability to lift 50-100 pounds routinely. Work also requires the ability to see, hear, and smell in order to detect problems and be responsive to customer, team member, and personal safety. Must be able to work under stressful conditions at times. Work requires the ability to foresee and prevent safety problems. Work must also follow appropriate safety procedures and the use of protective clothing and equipment including, steel-toed shoes and boots, hard hats, eye/ear protection, rain gear, gloves, traffic control equipment, and confined spaces safety kit.
